SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol varsity eight shell finished second in the repechage at the 2005 NCAA Championships, in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday. The Lady Vols will advance to the semifinals, along with No. 12 Michigan and No. 10 Southern California, while No. 14 Michigan State, No. 15 UCLA, No. 11 Wisconsin and No. 16 Syracuse will advance to Sunday's C Final, to determine the 13th-16th places.
UT's varsity eight, ranked sixth in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Varsity Eight Poll, crossed the line in 6:48.95, good enough for second place, behind Michigan (6:47.46) The shell comprised of Molly Oellerich [cox.], Kaitlin Bargreen, Lauren Wells, Rachel Mayberry, McKenzie Craig, Dana Forbes, Chelsea Pemberton, Andrea Bagwell and Beth Schwartz, narrowly beat out USC (6:49.46), which finished third, while defeating Michigan State (6:51.21), UCLA (6:55.55), Wisconsin (6:56.55) and Syracuse (7:04.19).
Earlier this afternoon, the Lady Vols finished fourth in the opening heat of varsity eight racing action, advancing the Orange and White to this afternoon's repechage. The Orange shell finished in a time of 6:27.03, behind second-ranked Yale (6:22.05), seventh-ranked Virginia (6:22.83) and fifth-ranked Brown (6:23.50). The UT shell finished ahead of Southern California (6:30.22) and Wisconsin (6:33.61).
Tennessee will take to the water again tomorrow in semifinal no. 2, and will face the likes of California, Harvard, Virginia, Washington and Michigan. The top-three finishers of each semi-final will advance to Sunday's Grand Final, while the remaining entrants will compete in Sunday's Petite Final. Last season UT competed in the Petite Final, while racing in Final C in 2003.
