INDIANAPOLIS - A late surge by the Tennessee Lady Vols was not quite enough to qualify them for the semifinals, as the team placed fifth in the First Eights Repechage at day one of the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships on Friday. The next race for the Lady Vols will come on Saturday in the First Eights C Final to determine the 13th through 16th positions at the NCAA Championships. UT needed to place among the top three in the repechage in order to earn a semifinal berth.

"Nothing can substitute for the experience of racing at NCAAs," UT Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "We definitely have more work to do, but I was proud of our race today. This will keep us hungry for the future."

In the First Eights repechage, the 14th-ranked Tennessee crew of junior Lizzie Brown (cox.), sophomore Kaitlin Bargreen, junior Nicole Bold, freshman Lauren Wells, sophomore Chelsea Pemberton, sophomore Dana Forbes, senior Kacey Montgomery, sophomore Melissa DiCerbo and senior Kay Logan clocked a time of 7:15.10. The Lady Vols made a strong charge with 500 meters remaining in the race to overtake No. 7 Washington State and No. 15 Boston University, however, came up just short of qualifying for the semifinals. No. 13 Texas claimed victory in the repechage, followed by No. 11 Yale, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 16 Michigan State.

The Lady Vols were racing in the repechage as a result of a fifth-place finish in their preliminary heat on Friday morning. In each of the three prelims, the top three finishers advanced directly to Saturday's semifinals, while the remaining boats had to race again in afternoon repechage.

Tennessee's Varsity 8+ crew, which is competing at the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history, will conclude its season on Saturday with the First Eights C Final at 11 a.m. CT.
