Rowing Brings Home Five Medals in Season Opener

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. The University of Tennessee women's rowing team kicked off the fall season in style on Saturday at the Chattanooga Head Race, taking home five total medals including two gold. The Lady Vols have now collected 75 total medals in their 17 trips to the event.

In the women's collegiate pair, the Lady Vols swept the event having three of their boats place in the first three slots. The Big Orange made up seven of the 15 entrants in the event.

The gold medal Tennessee "C" shell featured junior Rachel Whitaker and sophomore Katie King, the pair crossed the finish line in 19 minutes and 51.50 seconds. The Lady Vols "B" boat, including sophomore Victoria Bartell and senior Liz Dickson, took the second place slot completing the course in 19 minutes and 58.49 seconds. Closing out the top three was the Orange and White's "D" boat with senior Rachel White and freshman Courtney Crossley with a time of 20 minutes and 4.17 seconds.

Sophomore Erin Gibbemeyer and junior Sarah McAuliffe secured the fourth place slot with a time of 20 minutes and 50.71 seconds. Tennessee also had three boats secure seventh through ninth place with Morgan Suffridge and Victoria Florence, Kaitlan Aries and Kahala Schneider, and Hannah Waddell and McDarragh Minnock crossing the finish line in 21 minutes and 4.65 seconds, 21 minutes and 18.85 seconds, and 21 minutes and 40 seconds respectively.

In Tennessee's second and final event of the day, the Lady Vols brought home yet another gold medal in the women's collegiate four race.

The first place "C" shell coxed by senior Rachel Clagett, including Whitney Wolfe, Kahala Schneider, Katie King and Rachel Whitaker completed the course in 18 minutes and 33.77 seconds. Conference USA foe, the University of Alabama secured the second place slot with a time of 18 minutes 46.90 seconds.

Bringing home the Lady Vols' fifth medal of the day, Tennessee's "B" shell led by sophomore Harper Lucas crossed the finish line under a second behind Alabama with a time of 18 minutes and 47.03 seconds.

The last two boats Tennessee raced in the women's collegiate 4+ secured the fourth place slot with a time of 19 minutes and 01.21 seconds and the sixth spot with a time of 19 minutes and 45.06 seconds.

Tennessee now looks ahead towards a head-to-head match up with the Blue Devils of Duke University. The rowing team at Duke completed their 2013 spring campaign with a third place finish at the ACC Championships. This will be the first ever head-to-head race for the Lady Volunteers and the Blue Devils.
