The Lady Vol varsity rowers took home the Head of the Charles club 8 gold.
Oct. 19, 2002
For the second consecutive year, the University of Tennessee women's rowing team brought home the gold in the club eights race at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta.
The victorious Lady Vol team of Lizzie Brown (cox), Marissa Allen, McKenzie Craig, Dana Forbes, Chelsea Pemberton, Melissa DiCerbo, Claire Newton, Mary Gruzalski and Jessica Shreder covered the three-mile course on the Charles River in a time of 17:07.64, over five seconds ahead of second-place Riverside Boat Club. Last year, Tennessee's winning club 8+ squad finished the race in 17:31.82 to edge out Cincinnati by less that a second. Because entry regulations for the club 8+ state that no athlete may row in the race after having won the event, all nine members of the UT shell that finished at the top of the 59-team field on Saturday were newcomers to the event.
Competition will conclude at the Head of the Charles on Sunday as Kacey Montgomery, Kaitlin Bargreen, Kay Logan, Kelly Kraiss, Sally BeVille and Amy McIntosh, each a member of UT's victorious club 8+ team last year, take to the water with Nicole Bold, Lauren Wells and Eriz Artz (cox) in the championships 8+ race. Racing will be particularly competitive in the championships eights, as the Lady Vols will face 46 teams including universities across the country and the U.S. Rowing national team.
Several Tennessee boats also enjoyed success on Saturday back in Knoxville at the Head of the Tennessee regatta. The Lady Vol championships 4+ shell of Jovanna Vick (cox), Kelly Kravitz, Lindsay Jones, Andrea Bagwell and Ariana Fitzgerald conquered a 15-team field to win the race. The squad's time of 19:16.52 over the 5000-meter course outpaced second-place Murray State by over eight seconds.
In the collegiate novice 8+ event also at the Head of the Tennessee, UT boats claimed the second and fourth positions in an 18-team field. The Lady Vol boat comprised of Jessica Dainty (cox), Jennifer Sowers, Diane Samu, Beth Schwartz, Caitlyn Cleary, Anna Casey, Whitney Tehan, Andrea Searby and Allison Remington crossed the finish line in 19:04.65 the record the second-place finish.
The Lady Vols wrap up their fall schedule at the Head of the Chattahoochee on Saturday, Nov. 2, on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga., which will serve as the host site for the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2, 2003.
