With its first race in Knoxville of the 2003-04 season, the University of Tennessee women's rowing team put on quite a performance in front of the Big Orange faithful at the Head of the Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 25, by winning all four races in which the squad entered boats.

UT's Championship 8+ "A" shell, comprised of Lizzie Brown (cox.), Kaitlin Bargreen, Nicole Bold, Dana Forbes, McKenzie Craig, Lauren Wells, Chelsea Pemberton, Melissa DiCerbo and Jessica Shreder, covered the three-mile course in 16:46.86 en route to the triumph. The win marked the second victory of the fall season for the successful eight, as it also claimed gold at the Chattanooga Head Race on Oct. 11. Coming off a second-place showing in the Club 8+ at the Head of the Charles last Saturday, the Tennessee "B" boat of Erin Artz (cox.), Amy McIntosh, Beth Schwartz, Eileen Welsh, Lindsay Jones, Andrea Bagwell, Amy McCormick, Rachel Mayberry and Sara Hutcheson moved up to the Championship division this weekend and finished in the runner-up slot once again, clocking in at 17:15.93. Taking third place was Tennessee's shell of Molly Oellerich (cox.), Marissa Allen, Ashley Anders, Diane Samu, Kathryn Payne, Holly Holmes, Jaclyn Adams, Caitlyn Cleary and Katie Peterson, which came in at 17:53.66.

In the Championship 4+ competition, Lady Vol boats also exuded their dominance, as they swept the top four spots. The victorious boat of Artz (cox.), Bold, Bargreen, Schwartz and Wells finished with a winning time of 17:16.73. Crossing the line in second was the club of Brown (cox.), Pemberton, Forbes, Craig and DiCerbo in 17:43.14, followed by the grouping of Vick (cox.), McIntosh, Shreder, Welsh and Hutcheson in 17:45.35. Oellerich (cox.), Bagwell, Jones, Mayberry and McCormick teamed up to take fourth place in 18:03.05, more than 27 seconds ahead of the next finisher, Dayton.

Tennessee also found the Open 2- event to its liking, as the Lady Vols took first, second and third. Leading the way for the Orange and White was the tandem of Allen and Payne, clocking in at 21:17.20, ahead of teammates Cleary and Peterson, who checked in at 21:38.51. Holmes and Adams were the next to complete the event with a 22:59.40 mark, while Samu and Anders took sixth place in 27:07.26.

In Novice 8+ action, the UT boat of Oellerich (cox.), Kelly Hoskins, Heather Hill, Lindsey Kelly, Olivia Marnell, Shannon Speer, Kristen Galloway, Katie Weinhold and Laura Barton took gold in 17:50.79. The novice "B" crew, powered by Briana Gonzales, Michelle Tinkler, Christine Coakley, Steppie Williams, Brittany Isabell, Cameron Simpson, Michaela McGuire, Rory Mohon and Adrienne Long crossed the line in sixth (18:39.24), while the "C" shell of Meagan Smith, Brittany Hunley, Sherry Rahbar, Katie Nesvick, Ashley Butturini, Jessica Dorning, Stephanie Davis, Emily Burkeholder and Holly Lucas finished 12th (19:35.07).

The Lady Vols will be in action again on the Nov. 16 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Rivanna Romp.
