Lady Vols earn four medals at Secret City Head Race

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team took to the water on Saturday for the 2012 Secret City Head Race. The Lady Vols earned a total of five medals at the race, three from the Varsity 4+ and one from the Novice 8 race.

Tennessee raced three shells in the Varsity 4+ competition and placed first, second, and third.

Led by junior coxswain Rachel Claggett the Lady Vol's crew that consisted of Rachel Whitaker, Kaitlan Aries, Kahala Schneider, and Anita McLure completed the course with a time of 19 minutes and 56.234 seconds taking the first place spot.

In a close second with a time of 20 minutes and 5.98 seconds was Tennessee's `B' shell consisting of Andrea Keesecker, Mary-Hannah Daugherty, Michelle Goodwin, Sophia Grazian and coxed by Courtney Fritts.

Closing out the top three was the Lady Vols' third varsity 4+ coxed by Erin Allen crossing the finish line in 20 minutes and 53.282 seconds.

The novice rowing team also took to the water for their first time this season where they entered three shells in the Women's Novice 8 race placing first, fourth, and seventh.

The Lady Vols boat `A' crossed the finish line placing first with a time of 19 minutes and 27.968. This shell included Jamie Vice, Morgan Suffridge, Taylor Phillips, Sarah Hagaman, Erin Rogers, Kathleen Wagner, Sydney Trentham, and Mitra Mosadegh and was coxed by Corrin Phillips.

Murray State placed second with a time of 19 minutes and 46. 484 seconds.

UT's `B' shell coxed by Mary Nell Hayes and composed of Hayley Sewell, Lindsey Limerick, Ashley Shaffer, Olivia Oliasani, Charlsey Bush, Shelby Neal, Hannah Waddell, and Rachel Schwepfinger placed fourth with a time of 20 minutes and 35.297 seconds.

Taking the seventh spot was the shell composed of Abby Powers, Mackenzie Murray, Mikayla Beth Partin, Sara Conerly, Taylor Harris, Tabatha Davis, Madeleine Hartle, Julianne Watters and coxed Shayla Sanderson with a time of 22 minutes and 02.641 seconds.

The novice team is made up of rowers in their first years of collegiate competition.

The rowing team will return to action next weekend in the 30th annual Head of the Hooch regatta from Nov. 3-4 on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn. That regatta will be UT's final one of the fall season.
