CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lady Vol rowing team picked up two golds along with both a silver and bronze medals in the Head of the Hooch Regatta on Saturday in one of the largest rowing events in the southeastern United States that saw Tennessee competing against many of its rivals in the NCAA South Region.

In the marquee event, the Championship 8+, Tennessee took the top two spots among 27 boats competing in the race. Ranking first was the "Quest" crew of sophomore coxswain Pam Harder (Mayette, N.J.), senior Renee Brittle (Dublin, Va.), junior Krista Gearing (Fenwick, Ontario), senior Rachel Mayberry (Woodbridge, Va.), sophomore Erin-Monique Shelton (Upper Hutt, New Zealand), junior Nina Dobratz (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Caroline Howell (Davenport, Iowa), junior Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.) and senior Sarah Hutcheson (Orlando, Fla.) with a time of 15:35.7. Freshman Katie Ross (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) coxed the silver-medal winning shell of junior Genevieve Collins (Dallas, Texas), sophomore Alex Shishkov (Mississauga, Ontario), senior Heather Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.), junior Kendra Warren (Franklin, Tenn.), senior Kristen Galloway (Knoxville, Tenn.), juniors Leah Smelser (Macon, Ga.) and Jessica Ayers (Alpharetta, Ga.) and senior Katrina von Peters (Chattanooga, Tenn.), which finished in 15:48.3. The one-two finish tops last year's 1-3-10 showing in the event.

"We just wanted to have a good competitive race against each other," said Lady Vol head coach Lisa Glenn, "and push ourselves to the top of the field. I'm pleased with what the crews were able to accomplish."

The Orange and White captured three top-10 finishes with its four entries in the Championship Four. Leading the way was the veteran crew of Gearing, Mayberry, Hutcheson and Dobratz along with freshman Ross coxing, clocking in at 16:55.9. Following the second-place Kansas crew was UT's shell of Harder (cox.), Brittle, Hill, Warren and Ayers in third with a time of 17:24.4. Clemson's top two crews claimed fourth and fifth, while the Big Orange's crew of senior coxswain Stephanie Davis (Martin, Tenn.), senior Katie Payne (Parksville, British Columbia), junior Marisa Mohan (San Diego, Calif.) and freshmen Kate Snider (Ramona, Calif.) and Mary Dreusike (Huntington Station, N.Y.) checked in sixth with their time of 17:31.9. Tennessee also had the 21st-ranked crew of freshman coxswain Roshauna Singh (Vienna, Va.), sophomore Jocelyn Campbell (Memphis, Tenn.), freshman Brittany Sehring (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomores Danielle Hmielewski (Cookeville, Tenn.) and Rachel Dutkosky (Cordova, Tenn.), which stopped the clock in 18:35.1.

Two pairs from Rocky Top competed, with both clocking great raw times. However, penalties for missing turns around buoys hurt both crews, causing their ranks to fall to fourth and 10th, respectively. Shelton and Howell combined for a time of 18:56.4, which includes two 30-second additions, while the pair of Jones and Collins ended up with a 20:03.21 time after three penalties were assessed.

"It's a little frustrating because they rowed very well, but they got a couple of penalties," commented Glenn. "They worked very well together and rowed very efficiently. I'm just disappointed that they didn't get to see the results of their work."

The Orange and White's Novice 8+ continued their development, finishing eighth, ninth and 21st in the Collegiate Freshman Novice's 22-team field.

Tennessee wraps up the fall head race season next Sunday at the Rivanna Romp, hosted by the University of Virginia.
