KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee rowing is one of the three new affiliates that will compete in the Big 12 Conference starting in 2015.
Kansas, K-State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia will be joined by Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee beginning in 2015 with that season's Championship conducted Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Previously, all eight teams have competed in the Conference USA Championships for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia would compete in a separate five-team Big 12 Championship the week prior, though an automatic NCAA bid to the winner was not granted since it did not meet the six-team minimum.
These teams will still compete under the Conference USA banner in 2014 for an NCAA automatic qualifying spot on Saturday, May 17 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge.
The Lady Volunteers joined Conference USA in 2010 as an affiliate member and since has won two conference championships.
Tennessee Rowing will begin their spring competition season with two exhibition races against Michigan and Central Florida in Orlando on February 16.
