KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee women’s rowing team kicked off the 2008 spring season with two wins over Minnesota on Saturday. The Lady Vols edged the Golden Gophers in both the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four races, while UM earned victories in the Second Eight, Varsity Four and both novice races.
The day kicked off with the Varsity 4+ race, where Minnesota got off to a quick start and took home the victory. The Orange and White shell was manned by junior coxswain Jessica Williams, freshman Acacia Edmiston, sophomore Jewell Ludwigsen, senior Marisa Mohan and freshman Rachel Dooley. Tennessee finished 17 seconds behind Minnesota, which recorded an 8:18.55 mark.
In the main event of the day, the No. 7 ranked Lady Vol Varsity 8+ out-dueled the No. 13 Golden Gophers. Led by sophomore coxswain Katie Ross, the top shell of senior Kendra Warren, junior Erin-Monique Shelton, junior Kate Brownlee, freshman Libuse Bruncvíkova’, sophomore Mary Beth Dreusike, and seniors Krista Gearing, Mary Jones and Jessica Ayers took a three-seat lead through the first 1,000 meters before Minnesota powered its way back into the race. The Big Orange held on through a tight finish, though, finishing with a three-second margin over UM in 6:55.7.
The Second Eights finished nine seconds off of Minnesota after a nearly even race through the first 1,500 meters. Tennessee’s 2V8+ was guided by sophomore coxswain Sydney Newman and manned by junior Caroline Howell, senior Nina Dobratz, sophomore Kate Snider, sophomore Laura Miller, senior Genevieve Collins, senior Renee Brittle, sophomore Brittany Sehring and junior Alex Shishkov.
The Lady Vols finished the day on a high note, coming back from a slow start to top Minnesota by nearly four seconds in the Second Varsity 4+. UT’s Second Four of senior coxswain Danielle Hmielewski, freshmen Ruth Ann Johnson and RuthAnne Waldrop, sophomore Stephanie Hunley and freshman Melissa Toms made up the Golden Gophers’ early one-seat lead to finish the race in 8:27.46.
Minnesota finished the day with four wins, capturing both the Novice 8+ and Second Novice 8+, along with the V4+ and 2V8+ races.
Tennessee returns to the waters of Lake Loudoun next weekend for the final home race of the 2008 spring schedule. The Lady Vols will play host to South region rival Louisville on Sat., March 29 at 10 a.m.
