KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Lady Vol rowing team takes on a familiar foe on Saturday morning, as the Louisville Cardinals come to Fort Loudoun Lake for a dual meet that is slated to begin at 9 a.m. EDT, an hour earlier than usual due to the possibility of rough conditions on the course.
Tennessee, ranked ninth in the preseason Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)/USRowing Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll, is looking to improve on its opening weekend showing against No. 11 Notre Dame and No. 13 Minnesota. The crews took home four wins during the series of scrimmages, including a sweep of the three races in the Second Varsity 8+.
Louisville opened the spring against the Golden Gophers as well, picking up wins in the Varsity 8+ and 4+ on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on March 11. The Cardinals stood at No. 19 in the preseason CRCA/USRowing rankings. Last season, the Red and Black ranked ninth overall and third in the South Region, tying their best regional finish in program history. The First Eight finished second in last season's Aramark Sprints petite final, besting Virginia to help knock the Cavaliers off the top of the region standings for the first time in four years.
The two squads have met in dual meet situations the past two seasons, with the Lady Vols claiming sweeps in the three varsity events each time. The Orange and White also swept varsity wins in 2001 and 2002, while the 2003 Cardinals won the Varsity 4+ race.
The day starts at 9 a.m. with the Varsity 4+ race and concludes at 9:40 a.m. with the ranked Varsity 8+ crews taking to the course. Fans can watch the end of the races from public walkways near the Lady Volunteer Boathouse on Neyland Drive for free.
