KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The first regular-season release of the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll looks strikingly like the first from Tennessee's perspective. The Lady Vols hold steady at the No. 9 position after last week's win over South Region rival Louisville.
The Orange and White defeated the Cardinals last Saturday by 4.6 seconds on Fort Loudoun Lake on the Tennessee River in UT's final event of the season in Knoxville. Louisville, who earlier had defeated Minnesota in a dual race in Oak Ridge, actually moved up to 16th in this week's ratings.
California claimed the top spot this week, taking 14 of the 25 first-place votes. Virginia stands second, while Brown, Ohio State and Yale, all future opponents of the Lady Vols in April, round out the top five. Preseason No. 1 Princeton fell to sixth this week. Washington held at No. 7, followed by Southern California, Tennessee and Minnesota. Other teams UT races in the coming weeks also are in the top 25, including No. 11 Stanford, No. 14 UCLA and No. 18 Washington State.
The biggest mover this week is Clemson, who was receiving votes in the preseason before vaulting to No. 12 in this week's rankings.
Tennessee heads to Columbus, Ohio, for its first road event of the year as they line up against Ohio State and Michigan on April 7 on Griggs Reservoir.
