Lady Vol Rowing Team Heads To San Diego For Crew Classic

4/5/2001

Trip marks the first time Orange and White has competed on the West Coast

KNOXVILLE -- Head Coach Lisa Glenn and 18 members of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer rowing team will embark on their longest trip of the season today, as they head to San Diego, Calif to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic some 2,200 miles away. The Crew Classic is one of the biggest 2,000m races of the year and marks the second trip out west for the Lady Vols in six-year history. The farthest the Orange and White had traveled prior to this weekend was to Rancho Cordova, Calif., in 1997 for the NCAA Championships where the Varsity 4+ placed ninth.

Glenn will enter two boats into the event. The Varsity 8+ team of Erika Twedt, Lauren Kueck, Kristen Logan, Ashley Smith, Kacey Montgomery, Kelly Kraiss, Grace Harrington, Ginny Bradley and Lindsay Sagar will race in the heat A against UC-Davis, Kansas State, UC-Irvine, Rice and Santa Clara. The race is scheduled to being at 10:30 a.m. ET with heats B and C following. The top six times will go on to the Grand Finals, while the next six will advance to the Petite Finals.

At 1:10 p.m. ET, the 2nd Varsity 8+ team comprised of Shannon McMahon, Erin Moore, Claire Newton, Joyce Kranzke, Kay Logan, Davida Lopez, Mackenzie Earle, Sally BeVille and Kelly Hotaling will compete in heat C of the JV race. Other schools entered in that race are Notre Dame, Clemson, Virginia, Orange Coast and California. As is the case with the Varsity 8+ race, the top six times advanced to the Grand Final and the next six will race in the Petite Final.

Last Saturday, the Lady Vols defeated Louisville in a dual meet on the waters of Lake Loudoun sweeping the top two spots in both the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events by the same margin. The Crew Classic marks the fourth of seven straight weeks of competition for the Lady Vols. Next week, the Orange and White travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana University in a dual meet
