KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After a challenging weekend against Michigan and Ohio State, the Lady Vol varsity rowers hit the road again, this time facing three Pacific-10 Conference foes in dual meets at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday on Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City, Calif. Meanwhile, the UT novice rowers will take part in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, held at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., this weekend.
Tennessee comes into this weekend after falling in dual meets to the Wolverines and Buckeyes in Columbus last Saturday. The Lady Vol Varsity 4+ shell downed Michigan in the first race of those dual meets, helping propel it to earn Lady Vol Athletes of the Week honors. The First Eights crew, despite losing to both Big Ten teams, did move up to 15th in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Varsity 8+ Coaches Poll.
UT will take on UCLA on Friday afternoon before facing off against Washington State and host Stanford on Saturday. This marks the third straight season that the Big Orange will square off against the Cougars. Tennessee has never defeated WSU in a dual meet or tri-meet in history, but last year's Varsity 8+ did topple Washington State on Fort Loudoun Lake. The Lady Vols have never faced UCLA or Stanford in a dual-meet format.
This is the fourth consecutive season that the Lady Vols have made a cross-country trek to row in the Golden State. Last year, UT sent its top Varsity 8+ shell to the San Diego Crew Classic, where the crew finished sixth in the Grand Finals. The Orange and White also made trips to California to close the 2004 and 2005 seasons at the NCAA Championships, which were hosted by Sacramento State. The Lady Vols First Eights crew finished eighth in 2005 and 10th in 2004.
Friday's events for the Lady Vols begin at 3:10 p.m. PDT, as No. 15 Tennessee faces No. 14 UCLA in the First Eights. The second Varsity 8+ race starts at 3:40 p.m., while the Varsity 4+ take to the water at 4:10 p.m. Saturday morning's events commence at 9:30 a.m. PDT, as UT races sixth-ranked Washington State in the Varsity 8+. The final session on Saturday begins at 2 p.m., as No. 17 Stanford takes on the Lady Vols in the Varsity 8+. Tennessee's novice rowers will compete at 12:48 p.m. and 1:55 p.m. EDT on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
