KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team will hit the west coast this weekend, as it competes in the 2011 Lake Natoma Invitational, held on Rancho Cordova, Calif. from April 16-17.
The Lake Natoma Invitational is one of the nation's most prestigious events and this year's field features several of the country's best rowing teams.
Four of the nation's top 10 teams will be competing this weekend, No. 4 California, No. 6 Brown and No. 9 Wisconsin. Additionally, three other teams are receiving votes but are currently receiving votes: Tennessee, Oregon State and Notre Dame. Central Florida and host Sacramento State round out the field.
In last year's Lake Natoma Invitational, Tennessee finished fourth overall, earning a victory in the B final of the varsity eight.
The event will feature an NCAA-style points structure in which teams will accrue points on Saturday during two racing sessions. Placement into event finals on Sunday will be determined by Saturday's point totals. Three heats of each varsity event - first eight, second eight and four - will be run in both the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday. Sunday's schedule will consist of three finals (A, B, C) for each event, with the top three teams from Saturday competing in the A final, the fourth through sixth teams in the B final and the remaining three teams in the C final.
UT will begin racing at 9:20 a.m. PT on Saturday, competing against Brown and Sacramento State in the first set of heats. The V4+ begins at 9:20 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 9:50 a.m. and the V8+ at 10:20 a.m.
In the afternoon session, UT will race against fourth-ranked Cal and Conference USA foe Central Florida. The varsity four is at 3:00 p.m., with the 2V8+ starting at 3:30 and the V8+ at 4:00 p.m.
Tennessee has had a solid start to the spring season, taking three races from No. 20 Louisville on March 26 and notching a pair of wins from Minnesota on March 19.

UT's novice rowers will stay close to home this weekend, competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Oak Ridge on Saturday and Sunday.
