NOVICES IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT SIRA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lady Vol Rowing

Lady Vol Rowing

April 20, 2007

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With the varsity resting this weekend, the Lady Vol novice rowers get their chance to shine at the 2007 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

This will be the third 2,000-meter race for the first Novice 8+, who will compete in a semifinal on Saturday at 3:37 p.m. The group previously finished second behind Louisville and third in back of Michigan and Ohio State. Sacramento State, Murray State, UCF, Purdue and SMU race Tennessee for a spot in Sunday's grand final. The top three teams advance to the grand at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, while the bottom three move into the petite final, slated for a 8:51 a.m. start.

The even-less experienced second Novice 8+ crew takes to the water for just the second time during the sprint season. Their lone race of the weekend will be at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday as it lines up against Alabama, Georgia, Purdue, UCF and Louisville, which UT beat by two-and-a-half lengths nearly a month ago.

Last year, the top N8+ group ranked seventh, while the second shell came in third.

The varsity team takes to the water next Saturday, April 28, against No. 2 Brown and No. 4 Yale on the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn.
