2V8 Wins C-USA Boat of the Week

April 23, 2014

Tennessee's Second Varsity Eight, coxed by sophomore Harper Lucas and including Kaitlan Aries, Victoria Florence, Erin Gibbemeyer, Haileigh Norris, Katelyn Williams, Abigail Gray, Taylor Athan and Rachel Whitaker, was named Conference USA's Boat of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

The 2V8+ placed third in their final race on Lake Hartwell at the Clemson Invitational on April 20. The Lady Vol crew finished less than two seconds behind No. 21 Oregon State with a third-place time of 7 minutes and 51.4 seconds holding off Conference USA foe Oklahoma (7:58.1), Miami (8:01.3), Iowa (8:11.5) and Duke (8:15.0). The Harvard-Radcliffe heavyweight crew placed first (7:35.6).

The Tennessee second varsity eight was also victorious over conference rival Texas during the Clemson Invitational, placing sixth with a time of 7 minutes and 15.3 seconds, a little over 4 seconds ahead of Texas (7:19.4).

This accoclade marks the first for the Tennessee rowing program this season.
