Two Lady Vols Land on C-USA All-Academic Team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Erika Johnson and sophomore Kayla Lucier were named to the 2013 C-USA Rowing All-Academic Team, the conference office announced Thursday.

Erika Johnson, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, is a four-year letter winner for the Lady Vols. The Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology major, has also been named Second-Team CRCA All-South Region in 2012, Conference USA All-Conference Team in 2012, CRCA National Scholar Athlete in 2011, First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2010 and SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2011 and 2012.

Most recently, Johnson was awarded the Chancellor's Citations for Outstanding Scholarship in Arts and Sciences on Monday evening, April 8, 2013. She was among 20 other Tennessee student-athletes receiving the award.

This is Erika Johnson's third year in a row being named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

During her senior season, Johnson has rowed with the varsity eight. In the Lady Vols' regular season finale, part of the V8+ which placed fourth against Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn with a time of 6 minutes 45.0 seconds. At the Clemson Invitational, Johnson's boat finished in sixth place with a time of 6 minutes 46.4 seconds and fourth place with time of 6 minutes 32.6 seconds. Her boat placed second in both varsity eight races with times of 7 minutes 23.7 seconds and 7 minutes 33.85 seconds, respectively, at the Ohio State Invitational. Placed 30th at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston in the Championship 8 with a time of 18 minutes and 11.03 seconds. Finished second in the Collegiate 8+ with a time of 16 minutes and 32.15 seconds at the Chattanooga Head Race, placed first in the Collegiate 4+, completing the course in 18 minutes and 46.75 seconds.

Kayla Lucier, a sophomore, hails from Hamilton, Ontario and is currently studying microbiology. In 2012, Lucier was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, was a member of the C-USA Honor Roll for the 2012-13 school year, and was also a member of the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2012.

Lucier, has rowed in both the second varsity eight, the varsity eight and the varsity four at different points in the season. In the regular season finale, part of the second varsity eight which placed third against Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn with a time of 6 minutes and 59.7 seconds. At the Clemson Invitational, finished in third place in both sessions with times of 6 minutes and 48.5 seconds and 6 minutes and 37.7 seconds. Placed second in both varsity eight races with times of 7 minutes and 23.7 seconds and 7 minutes and 33.85 seconds, respectively, at the Ohio State Invitational. Against Louisville, rowed in the V4+ finishing second place with a time of 7 minutes and 36.3 seconds, and also raced against Minnesota with a time of 7 minutes and 36.4 seconds.

The C-USA all-academic rowing team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a key contributor to their team. This year's squad each compiled a GPA of 3.5 or better, averaging an impressive 3.88.
