Rowing Canada Aviron announced that former University of Tennessee Lady Vol rower Lauren Wells (2002-06) will be traveling to the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, August 23-30.
Wells, a native of London, Ontario, Canada, earned a spot on the Canadian Team as a member of the Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls.
"The team is a mix of veteran and up-and-coming athletes who are eager to see the results of their training on the world stage," said Peter Cookson, High Performance Director. "We're looking forward to some exciting racing in Poznan later this month."
While at Tennessee, Wells was accomplished in the classroom as well as on the water. Lisa Glenn, her collegiate coach and mentor, was not surprised by her selection to the team. ""I am thrilled that Lauren has the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Championships. She is a dedicated and persistent athlete.
"Rowing demands miles upon miles and hours upon hours of highly focused execution; Lauren understands this, and it is nice to see her gradually reaping the rewards of the hard work she is willing to put into her sport. I know her team is behind her, and we are all proud of her. Lauren showed her teammates what persistence can do for you as a collegiate athlete, now she is showing what it does for you at the international level."
Teams have already left their Victoria, B.C., and London, Ontario, high performance centers and are currently at training camps in Italy.
