KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee women's rowing team opens the fall portion of the 2009-10 season on Saturday at the Chattanooga Head Race on the Tennessee River. The Lady Vol varsity squad will participate in three events, including the collegiate 8+ race, the main event for the college women.
Head Coach Lisa Glenn welcomes back 21 members from last year and several new faces as well. Among the returners are seniors Mary Beth Dreusike, Jewell Ludwigsen, Sydney Newman, Laura Miller, and Kate Snider, members of the shells that took gold and silver at last years' Chattanooga Head collegiate 8+ race.
Tennessee looks to continue their past success at their 13th trip to the Chattanooga Head Race. The Orange and White have earned 44 total medals at the event, including seven last season. At the 2008 edition, the Lady Vols participated in the collegiate eight, collegiate pair and collegiate four races, bringing home three gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
The Big Orange kicks off the racing weekend, entering three shells into the C8+ event that will feature 2010 opponent and Southeastern Conference member Alabama. In the afternoon, the Lady Vols will mainly be competing against themselves in the collegiate pair event that features 4 Tennessee shells out of six entrants. The team follows-up the 2:10 p.m. event by placing four shells in the collegiate 4+ race, set to launch at 3:20 p.m.
Results of the 57 total events at the Chattanooga Head Race will be available online at chattanoogaheadrace.com.
