KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee women's rowing team will open the fall season on Saturday at the 16th annual Chattanooga Head Race on the Tennessee River. The Lady Vol varsity squad will compete in three events and is among the seven teams participating in the collegiate 8+ race, the main event for the college women.
The Orange and White return 17 varsity letterwinners from the 2007-08 squad that finished a program-best fifth at NCAA Championships in the Second Varsity 8+ event. Among the returners are senior Erin-Monique Shelton, who became Tennessee's second three-time All-American last year, and sophomore Libuše Bruncvíkova', who joins Shelton as the only returning Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-South Region selections on the team.
The Lady Vols also welcome back six of the nine members of the 2V8+ crew that took fifth at national championships in junior coxswain Sydney Newman, juniors Laura Miller and Kate Snider, sophomore Melissa Toms, senior Caroline Howell and sophomore Rachel Dooley. Tennessee's junior coxswain duo of Newman and Katie Ross come into the 2008-09 season with two full years of play calling under their belts. Ross also brings back-to-back years of NCAA Championship experience to the table.
This year marks the 12th trip to the Chattanooga Head Race for Tennessee. The Orange and White has earned 37 total medals at the event, including nine last season. At the 2007 edition, the Lady Vols took home first in the collegiate eight, collegiate pair and collegiate four races.
This weekend, the Big Orange will be looking to continue its success in Chattanooga. UT will open the day with the C8+ event at 10:30 a.m., entering two shells into a race that will feature spring 2009 opponents Alabama and Clemson. In the afternoon, the Lady Vols will be competing mainly against each other, as the collegiate pair event will feature eight Tennessee shells out of 10 total entrants. The Orange and White will close out the day at 4:30 p.m. with the collegiate 4+, placing four shells in the event which will again feature the Crimson Tide and Tigers.
The 52 total events at the Chattanooga Head Race get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the men's collegiate novice 8+ race. Results for all the events will be available online at chattanoogaheadrace.com.
