KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Lady Vol rowing team will take to the Tennessee River for their season opener on Saturday. This section of their home river however, is in Chattanooga for the 21st annual Chattanooga Head Race. This will be Tennessee's 17th year racing in the Chattanooga Head Race and they have earned a total of 70 medals at the event.
At just over three-miles, this race offers the Lady Vols their first opportunity to compete against other notable universities.
The Women's College 2- will be the Lady Volunteers' first race of the fall racing season where they will compete against Conference USA foe the University of Alabama, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. This race will begin at 11 AM.
Later in the day at 3:40 PM the team will race in the Women's College 4+ division. The competition in this race includes: the University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Emory University, Tulane University, Vanderbilt University, Chattanooga, Northwestern, Berry College, Murray State, Samford, and the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
At the 2012 race, the Lady Vols participated in the Collegiate 8+ and the Collegiate 4+, bringing home one gold, two silvers and 1 bronze.
In fall rowing regattas, all crews row five kilometers upstream, make the turn, then enter through the chute to start the race. All boats start at different times and race the clock throughout the course of the winding 5-kilometer race.
