KNOXVILLE, Tenn. In their debuts for the Orange & White, freshman forward Jackie Acevedo (Austin, Texas) found the back of the net twice in a span of 9:15 in the first half and rookie midfielder Kylee Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) contributed a goal and an assist as No. 16 Tennessee defeated the Pennsylvania Strikers, 4-0, in an exhibition on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the UT Soccer Complex. Sophomore forward Genna Gorman (Lakewood, Colo.), the 2004 Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, added a goal on a second half penalty kick and assisted on Rossi's score early in the opening period.
"It was great to see our team in a competitive environment," said Lady Vol Head Coach Angela Kelly. "I thought we played extremely well in the attacking third of the field today against the Strikers. The Lady Vols wasted no time getting on the scoreboard to christen the exhibition season as a cross by Gorman found Rossi standing alone in the box. The rookie slammed the ball past Pennsylvania goalkeeper Caitlin Huylo at the 34-second mark to put UT up 1-0.
Down a goal early, the Strikers applied some pressure to the Tennessee defense in the 12th and 13th-minute as a shot by Melissa Speros was blocked out in front of the UT net by a defender. As the ball remained in play, senior goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) was forced to make a save on a driving shot by Julie Edwards.

Following a quality shot on goal by midfielder Casey Crawford (Mandeville, La.) that forced another save by Huylo, Acevedo continued to dazzle the Striker defense with her speed. Early in the second half, the Lady Vols delivered a long ball into the box that resulted in a Pennsylvania handball on a clear attempt and an automatic penalty kick for Tennessee. Gorman calmly stepped to the line and converted the opportunity for the Orange & White's final score of the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson (Kettering, Ohio), one of 13 rookies on the 2005 UT roster, played the second stanza in net for Tennessee and produced several highlight-reel quality saves to preserve the shutout.
