KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Caroline Brownscored a penalty kick in the second overtime period to lead Tennessee to a 1-0 victory over William & Mary to start the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at Regal Stadium.
Brown drilled the free kick into the right corner outside the reach of the goalkeeper to end the match with 3:26 left in overtime and help Tennessee to a 3-0 start for the first time in program history.
William & Mary dropped to 0-2.
Tennessee certainly had its chances -- and many near misses -- before Brown's winning strike. The squad outshot William & Mary 31-5, almost twice as many shots as the team had taken in its season-opening wins against WKU (17 shots) and Samford (16).
The first half was a scoreless battle with UT enjoying a 14-1 shot advantage. William & Mary applied some early pressure in the first 10 minutes, keeping the Lady Vols on their heels. Tennessee responded with a with attacking runs mostly on the left side of the field with Ashlee Burtfiring four shots (one on goal) off the bench before the break.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Eckelhad three saves to record her second shutout of the season, both of them coming at home. She has given up just one goal in three matches this season.
In the first match of the Lady Vol Classic, Akron defeated VCU 2-1.
The tournament picks back up Sunday with the Lady Vols playing VCU at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Friday was Tennessee's first overtime match of the season. The squad played four overtime matches in 2011 with a 2-2 record ... Brown has two match-winning goals this season and 10 in her career, which ties her for third on the all-time list with Mick Imgram (2006-09), Ali Christoph (2003-06) and Keeley Dowling (2001-04). Kylee Rossi has the program record with 15 game-winners from 2005-08.
