LARNACA, Cyprus - On the other side of the world, Tennessee's Hannah Wilkinson had a big day on Friday, scoring a goal in New Zealand's 2-0 win over Italy in the second day of group play in the 2013 Cyprus Women's Cup.
Hannah Wilkinson gave the Football Ferns a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute, receiving a ball over the top of the Italian defense and scoring from a narrow angle after challenging the goalkeeper. UT's 2012 All-American was a halftime substitute in Friday's game at GSZ Stadium in Larnaca, Cyprus. On Wednesday, she helped New Zealand to a 1-0 win over Scotland in the first game played of this year's Cyprus Women's Cup. The Football Ferns will next play England on Monday in GSP Main Stadium in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Tennessee alum Rhian Wilkinson helped lead Canada to a 2-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday. She played 86 minutes in the Canadian triumph. On Friday, Canada defeated Finland, 2-1, at GSP Main Stadium. Rhian Wilkinson played the full 90 minutes in the victory.
Hannah Wilkinson and New Zealand are in Group A while Rhian Wilkinson and Canada are in Group B. Only teams from Groups A and B are in contention to win the title. The group winners from A and B will face off in the final and the runners-up will play for third place. The Group C winner will play the better third-place team from Groups A and B for fifth place and the Group C runner-up will play the other third-place team for seventh place. The finals are slated for March 13.
