KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Single goals from junior Alexis Owens and freshman Iyana Moore provided the difference as the Tennessee Lady Vol soccer team recorded a 2-0 spring exhibition victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
"This was a solid team win," Lady Vol Head Coach Brian Pensky said. "Our defensive organization and possession just got better and better as the match went on. We are extremely proud of our team. They were terrific."
Owens' score came midway through the opening half off a ball slipped through by senior Emily Dowd. The Carmel, Ind., native calmly collected Dowd's pass and pushed it past Cincinnati's keeper for a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Vols created numerous opportunities for themselves throughout the game, many of those coming off corner kicks struck by junior Kylie Bono. Junior Ali Hall, sophomore Caroline Brown and junior Amy Harrison provided a lot of pressure, being denied on various opportunities.
During the 65th minute the Big Orange was able to expand its lead to a more comfortable 2-0. Sophomore Caroline Capocaccia played a ball down the left flank to Dowd, who beat her defender 1v1 to get to the Bearcats' end line, before pulling a cross back to the forward Moore. She out-battled her marker and fired a shot that slipped in at the far post, extending the Lady Vols lead to 2-0.
From that point on, Tennessee was able to patiently possess the ball and slow the game down, securing the 2-0 shutout.
The Lady Vols return to action on Sat., April 14, when they host the Tennessee Collegiate Classic at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
