KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A wet Saturday in Knoxville didn't stop over 500 fans from showing up at Regal Stadium for the Lady Vol soccer program's annual "Meet and Greet" fan event to kick off the season.
With the rain falling, an overflow crowd jammed into the video room under the stadium to get video previews of the 2013 team and to hear from head coach Brian Pensky.
Pensky, beginning his second season at the helm of the Tennessee program after a 14-5-3 record a year ago, introduced each player to the fans, telling a bit of the player's background before taking a few questions from the audience. He also addressed the heightened expectations placed on the team after being picked to finish third in the Southeastern Conference. The Lady Vols finished third a season ago after the preseason poll picked the team 11th.
The players signed autographs outside for the fans, which senior midfielder CC Cobb rated as the highlight of the fan event.
"It's really fun," Cobb said. "We saw a lot of these kids at camp for them to come out and support us, it's important to us and means a lot. We have a good time and I hope they do too."
Junior defender Allie Sirna agreed.
"It's always great to see the people that are cheering for you and actually be able to put a face with the cheers," she said.
After the conclusion of the autograph session and with the rains having cleared the area, much of the crowd stuck around to watch the Orange and White scrimmage.
With the preseason opener less than a week away, Cobb said it was and exciting time for the team to be so close to the first kick.
"We still have a lot of work to do," she said. "We've come a long way and coach is getting us where we need to be."
