KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For her outstanding efforts last Friday night during Tennessee's season-opening, 3-0 victory over Western Kentucky, junior soccer forward Chelsea Hatcher has been selected as the year's initial Lady Vol Athlete of the Week.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native registered UT's opening goal of the season just 3:33 into the new campaign and later added an assist on the first career score by freshman midfielder Caroline Brown as the Big Orange rolled past the Lady Toppers. The occurrence marked the first-ever three-point or better match in Hatcher's career at Rocky Top and her second career match-winning goal.
The tally resulted from a strong move to the middle by rookie midfielder Tori Bailey. The Fenton, Mich., native beat her defender and passed to Hatcher just inside the top of the 18-yard box. She dribbled to her right, pivoted quickly and buried a right-footed shot past Western Kentucky's Preseason All-Sun Belt goalkeeper Libby Stout to make it 1-0. In the 70th minute, off a long free kick into the box by senior defender Grace Cuenin, Hatcher tapped the feed to Brown who hammered home her first collegiate score to finalize the count at 3-0.
Hatcher and her Lady Vol teammates return to action this weekend by playing host to the annual First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at the Regal Soccer Stadium on Aug. 27th and 29th. UT faces off against #14/12 Maryland on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET before wrapping up the event on Sunday at 3 p.m. versus Richmond. Soccer action begins on Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET as Richmond battles Kennesaw State in the opener.
