We're happy to continue a new feature here at UTLadyVols.com called Tennessee Soccer Alumni Weekly where we'll spotlight former Lady Vol soccer players, asking them a few questions about what they have been doing since college and what their experiences at Rocky Top meant to them. Check back throughout the rest of the season to catch up with some outstanding former Lady Vol soccer alumni.
With Tennessee soccer celebrating its annual alumni weekend over Oct. 7-9 in Knoxville, we're taking a look at several former Lady Vols leading up to soccer's kick-off against Ole Miss (Oct. 7 - 7 p.m.)
The latest alumni spotlight shines on former Lady Vol Sue Flamini who played at Tennessee from 2001-04. A 2001 honorable mention Soccer Buzz All-American, the Cranford, N.J., product played in the second-most matches in UT history (91) and started the sixth most (85) while completing her career with 15 goals, 25 assists (tied for fourth in the Lady Vol history books) and seven match-winning scores. Flamini helped lead the Big Orange to two SEC regular season crowns (2003, 2004), two SEC Tournament titles (2002, 2003) and three straight NCAA Sweet 16 berths (2002-04).
Questions and Answers with Sue Flamini
1) What have you been doing since leaving Tennessee?
"I currently live in New Jersey and work in New York City for News Corp Digital Media doing advertising sales. I just got married in July of 2011."
2) What is your fondest memory while wearing the Tennessee Orange?
"When we beat Florida in overtime to win the SEC Championship for the first time (2002). Also when Cori blew the air-horn after the second game of that tournament."
3) What is the one lesson/concept you learned at Tennessee that has helped you the most as you've moved into your post-collegiate career?
"Be coachable, there's always something new to learn and always give your best effort day in and day out."
4) Give your thoughts on what it means to be a part of the Tennessee Soccer program? What it meant to you as a player and what it means to you today?
"The Tennessee Soccer program is more than a group of players getting on the field to take on the competition. Tennessee Soccer is family. You go through everything together - from pre-season, to championships, to long days of traveling...from waking up early for practice, to living together, and celebrating holidays before we all head home to our `other' families. Tennessee Soccer becomes a way of life, and the people involved in the program become part of a family that lasts forever."
5) Which Tennessee teammates do you still stay in contact with?
"Mostly all of them thanks to Facebook! Specifically: Keeley Dowling, Ali Christoph, Cori Stevens Boyle, Jen Laughridge Grubb, Ellen Dean Davis, Shayna Teutsch, Kelly Berrall, Sharon Kelly Groer, Kayla Lockaby, Ashley Dawes, Melissa Amado, Emily Redberg, Rachel Newkirk Webster, Kim Sgarlata and Lisa Tipton Wiles to name a few..."
