ST. GEORGE, Utah - Amid cold weather conditions, Cheyanne Tarango and Lauren Gibson both homered and Tarango struck out eight batters in a two-hitter to lead the No. 6/5 Tennessee softball team to a 5-0 victory over South Dakota on Saturday in the Red Desert Classic.
The Lady Vols (4-0) totaled seven hits in their second shutout win of the season. Tarango (1-0) enjoyed an outstanding all-around game, limiting South Dakota (0-3) to just two hits in seven innings. She finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run homer to left center in the first inning. Gibson finished 2-for-3 as well with a solo shot in the first inning, her first of the season. Raven Chavanne was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two runs, a walk and three stolen bases, tying a career high she last achieved on March 13, 2010, against Tennessee Tech.
Erica Denny (0-2) took the loss for South Dakota after allowing five earned runs over six frames. Katie Cochran and Kassie Loe recorded the Coyotes' two hits in the game.
Tennessee jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Chavanne drew a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second and third base in the following at-bat. Kat Dotson drove her in with a sac fly to left field to give UT a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Gibson muscled a ball over the wall in right field on an 0-1 pitch. Melissa Davin followed with a triple off the wall in right center to set up Tarango's two-run moon shot over the wall in left center.
UT added one more run in the fifth inning. Chavanne led off with a double to center field and two batters later, Madison Shipman plated her with a sac fly to center field.
Tennessee was the designated home team in this game and it was also the first meeting between the schools.
