Feb. 16, 2014

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. --Annie Aldrete's four-RBI seventh inning and Ellen Renfroe's 12 strikeouts helped No. 1 Tennessee beat previously-undefeated Illinois, 10-0, late Saturday night in the USF Tournament in Tampa, Fla.

The Lady Vols (8-0) scored one in the first, one in the sixth and eight in the seventh en route to a win over Illinois (8-1). The game did not start until 10:40 p.m. ET and it finished at 1:05 a.m. ET. UT improved to 4-0 in its all-time series with Illinois.

Tennessee is 8-0 for just the sixth time in program history. UT's best starts to the season include opening 12-0 in 2013, 8-0 in 2008, 23-0 in 2007, 24-0 in 2006 and 16-0 in 2005.

Aldrete lead the team offensively going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a home run, the first of her career. Haley Tobler went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lexi Overstreet added a solo home run in the sixth that help bolster Tennessee's lead to 2-0 at the time. Megan Geer was 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs. Hannah Akamine drove in two.

Renfroe (4-0) fanned 12 over seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits. Illinois' Shelese Arnold (3-1) allowed 13 hits and 10 runs over seven innings.

Tennessee did not waste any time with its bats, scoring one in the top of the first inning. After Madison Shipman drew a walk, Melissa Davin scored Shipman with an RBI double that hit the center field wall. This marked Davin's fourth RBI of the weekend.

Illinois threatened in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on and one out, but Renfroe got herself out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout.

The Lady Vols added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Overstreet hammered a solo home run over the right-field fence. The home run brought the score to 2-0 and was Overstreet's third in the 2014 season.

Following a single from Megan Geer, Aldrete hit a two-run home run to center field in the top of the seventh inning. Akamine added a two-RBI single, Tobler and Geer each had RBI singles and Aldrete added two more RBIs to extend UT's lead to 10-0.

Tennessee will play Wright State on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. ET. Live audio will be available via UTSports.com and live stats through GoUSFBulls.com. This game will conclude UT's weekend in the USF Tournament.
