CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Madison Shipman drove in three runs, Melissa Davin went 3-for-3 and Ivy Renfroe tossed an eight-strikeout, two-hitter to lead No. 4/4 Tennessee past UC Santa Barbara, 5-0, Saturday night in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Lady Vols (13-2) closed out their weekend on a high note, besting a talented UC Santa Barbara squad (9-4), nine hits to two, at Big League Dreams' Yankee Stadium. The Gauchos presented a tough challenge as they had played well in a 5-2 loss to No. 2/1 Oklahoma on Friday and took a 12-10 win over BYU earlier Saturday.
Shipman went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI single, an RBI double and a walk. Davin was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple off the wall in right center. Raven Chavanne finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. Chavanne also tied her career high with three stolen bases.
Ivy Renfroe (4-0) notched her third complete-game shutout of the season. She displayed great command in the circle, fanning eight batters with just two hits allowed. She threw 72 of her 102 pitches for strikes.
Shelby Wisdom (7-4) took the loss for the Gauchos, allowing five runs (three earned) over the first five frames. Adriana Collins pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
UT jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Shipman clubbed a two-run single to center field and advanced on the throw. Chavanne and Kat Dotson scored on the play.
The Lady Vols' lead grew to 3-0 in the second when Chavanne plated pinch runner Hannah Trainer form third base on an RBI single through the left side.
In the bottom of the fourth, Shipman smacked a one-out double to left field off the fence to pate Chavanne from second base. Two batters later, Cheyanne Tarango knocked a ground rule double over the fence in left to score Shipman from second base.
Tennessee went 3-2 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Chavanne had the best week at the plate, hitting .467 (7-for-15) with three runs, one RBI, four walks and four stolen bases. Shipman, who hit .353, led the team with five RBIs. Ivy Renfroe made four appearances and two starts, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 18 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched and no runs allowed. Opposing batters hit just .113 off Ivy Renfroe.
