KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Madison Shipman went 2-for-3 with a home run to extend her hitting streak to a school-record-tying 20 games and No. 3/2 Tennessee took a 3-0 win over College of Charleston on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Tennessee (21-2) scored one in the second, one in the third and one in the sixth.
Shipman hit a home run in the third inning to match UT's single-season hitting streak record of 20 consecutive games set by Kristi Durant from March 20, 2003, to April, 13, 2003. The Tennessee hitting streak record is 24 games by Sarah Fekete, spanning two seasons from May 11, 2004, to Feb. 25, 2005.
Shipman hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Annie Aldrete went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI as well. Freshman Megan Geer hit 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the Haley Tobler and Lexi Overstreet scored a run apiece for the Big Orange.
Rainey Gaffin (4-1) earned the win, pitching four frames and allowing just three hits and no runs, striking out three batters. Ellen Renfroe got her second save of the season, allowing only one hit and no runs, also striking out three.
Samantha Martin (5-2) took the loss for the Cougars. She pitched three innings, giving up a home run, five hits and two earned runs. She was replaced by Valerie Cassell in the fourth inning. Over two frames, she allowed two hits and no runs. Hope Klicker finished the game for College of Charleston, allowing one run on two hits in the sixth.
Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Tobler and Shaliyah Geathers both singled to get on base. Geer then singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw to score Tobler to give UT a 1-0 lead.
Shipman gave the Lady Vols another run in bottom of the third, crushing a home run to left center to make the score 2-0.
UT added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win. Overstreet doubled to center field. Aldrete then hit an RBI single to left and advanced to second on the throw to plate Overstreet.
