FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Melissa Davin crushed a grand slam and Hannah Akamine drove in three runs to propel No. 2 Tennessee to a 9-2 win over Arkansas on Friday in the SEC opener for both teams at Bogle Park.
Tennessee (23-2, 1-0 SEC) scored two in the first off Akamine's two-run shot to left, two in the second and four in the third on Davin's grand slam. Arkansas (19-7, 0-1) scored two in the bottom of the third, but UT answered in the top of the fourth when Akamine ripped an RBI single
Davin finished 3-of-4 with a home run, one double, five RBIs and three runs scored. Akamine was 2-for-3 with one double and three RBIs. Rainey Gaffin was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Ellen Renfroe improved to 14-0 with the win after striking out seven over seven innings with just one earned run allowed. Arkansas' Grace Moll (8-3) took the loss after allowing four earned runs over two innings of work.
Tennessee took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Akamine ripped a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to score Megan Geer and Davin.
UT added two more runs in the second inning. Davin hit a one-out RBI double down the left field line to score Gaffin from second base. Madison Shipman followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Davin and give UT 4-0 lead.
The Lady Vols took firm control of the game in the top of the third inning when Davin clubbed a two-out grand slam to left field. The grand slam was her first of the season and UT's second on the year.
Arkansas got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to climb to within 8-2. Kasey Fagan opened the inning with a leadoff homer to left. With two outs, Chloe Oprzedek scored an unearned run from third base when Davin dropped Jayme Gee's fly ball to left field.
UT's lead grew to 9-2 in the top of the fourth when Akamine shot an RBI single up the middle to score pinch runner Alley Perkins.
Tennessee and Arkansas will now play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. ET due to expected rain Saturday evening into Sunday. Both games will feature free live audio broadcasts with Brian Rice on the call on UTSports.com.
