KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Madison Shipman hit the game-winning RBI single down the right field line and Raven Chavanne tallied three hits and two runs on her birthday to lead No. 8/8 Tennessee to 5-4 win on Sunday and a series sweep of No. 5/4 Texas A&M for the weekend.
To start SEC play this year, Tennessee has now gone 6-3 against No. 1/2 Alabama, No. 3/3 Florida and No. 5/4 Texas A&M.
Tennessee (27-6, 6-3 SEC) scored four runs over the first two innings to seize control of the game early on. Texas A&M (26-5, 4-4 SEC) scored two in the second and two in the fifth to even the game at 4-4 before Shipman knocked the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded.
Shipman finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Chavanne went 3-for-4 with one double, one RBI and two runs. Kat Dotson was 2-for-4 with one run. Lauren Gibson reached base three times with an RBI single and two walks. Melissa Brown drove in two runs.
Ellen Renfroe was tough in the circle, striking out five while allowing four runs (two earned) over 6.1 innings. Ivy Renfroe (12-3) earned the win, striking out two to get the final two outs of the top of the seventh.
UT jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs and runners on second and third, Brown hit a two-RBI single up the middle.
Texas A&M tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second when Dumezich and Cali Lanphear scored with two outs following an errant throw from third base that allowed Emily Albus to reach.
The Lady Vols pulled back in front, 4-2, in the bottom of the second. With one out and Rainey Gaffin on second, Chavanne clubbed an RBI double to left field. Two batters later Gibson hit an RBI single to right field and advanced on the fielding error, bringing home Chavanne on the play.
The Aggies plated two runs in the top of the fifth to knot things at 4-4. Albus legged out an infield single right in front of home plate to lead off the inning. In the next at-bat, Meagan May swung at the first pitch she saw and hammered a two-run homer over the wall in center field.
Tennessee escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth when Ellen Renfroe induced a groundout to third. UT dodged an Aggie runner on third base in the top of the seventh when Ivy Renfroe entered in relief and fired a pair of strikeouts.
Chavanne led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single to short. Dotson followed with a single to first base. Gibson drew a walk on a full count to load the bases. Shipman sent a 1-0 pitch to right field to plate Chavanne for the game-winning run.
Tennessee will next host Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
