#2 UT Falls Short In 8-4 Loss To LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. -- No. 2 Tennessee struggled to plate runners on base and struggled with four errors on Saturday in an 8-4 loss to LSU.

Tennessee (31-5, 8-3 SEC) scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning. LSU (22-15, 4-7 SEC) scored one in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth. Only two of LSU's eight runs were earned due to the Lady Vols' four errors in the game.

Taylor Koenig finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Shaliyah Geathers went 2-for-4.

UT starter Ellen Renfroe (21-2) took the loss after striking out one and allowing one earned run over 1.1 innings. Erin Gabriel allowed seven runs (one earned) and struck out one over three relief frames. Rainey Gaffin threw 1.2 innings with no runs allowed.

Baylee Corbello (11-5) gave up four earned runs over 4.1 frames en route to earning the win for LSU. Ashley Czechner tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save.

LSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Allison Falcon hit a one-out RBI single to center field, plating Constance Quinn for the first run of the game. Gabriel relieved Renfroe in the circle and induced a 6-3 double play. Madison Shipman fielded a ball at short, stomped on second base and made a crisp throw to first to get two outs.

The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the third to grow their lead to 2-0. With one out and a runner on third, Jacee Blades knocked an RBI single up the middle past a diving Shipman. Shipman turned another 6-3 double play in the next at-bat to end the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Vols had the bases loaded with no outs but could not plate a run. Shipman was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Annie Aldrete followed with a single to left field. Hannah Devotie pinch ran for Aldrete and Hannah Akamine reached on a fielder's choice, loading the bases with no outs. LSU starter Baylee Corbello struck out Koenig, induced a force out at home on a Haley Tobler's fielder's choice and struck out Cheyanne Tarango looking to escape the inning unscathed.

LSU added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to build its lead to 5-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, pinch hitter Kailey McCasland reached on an error at second base that rolled into the outfield. Three runs scored on the play.

Tennessee's offense came alive in the top of the fifth as the Lady Vols poured on four runs to pull to within 5-4. Geathers opened the inning with a single up the middle and Geer followed with a walk. Two batters later, Shipman walked to load the bases. Aldrete drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Geathers and get UT on the scoreboard. Ashley Czechner replaced Corbello in the circle and Akamine drove in a run with a ground out to short. Koenig followed with a two-run single to center field to bring the Lady Vols to within one run.

LSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 8-4. Rainey Gaffin relieved Gabriel in the circle with the bases loaded and one out. An RBI groundout by Sandra Simmons scored one run and Falcon followed with a two-run single to right field.
