May 4, 2013

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Mo. --No. 2 Tennessee struggled to get things going offensively Friday night as No. 11 Missouri took a 2-0 win in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

The Lady Vols (42-8, 15-5 SEC) were contained by a dominant pitching performance by Mizzou's Chelsea Thomas, who tossed a no-hitter and struck out seven batters. The Tigers (32-9, 14-7 SEC) scored runs in the second and the fifth.

UT and Mizzou were notified an hour and a half before the 7:30 p.m. ET game that the Southeastern Conference had decided to reverse its previous decision to not make up Friday's rained-out game. The teams were initially notified Saturday morning that there would be no doubleheaders for the remainder of the weekend to make up Friday's game. The teams are currently playing a second game that started shortly after the conclusion of the first game.

Ellen Renfroe (15-3) took the loss after striking out five over 4.2 frames with two earned runs allowed. Ivy Renfroe tossed 1.1 innings in relief with two strikeouts.

Thomas improved to 20-4 on the season. She issued three walks in the game.

The Lady Vols left three runners on base in the loss.

In the top of top of the second, Melissa Davin drew a two-out walk on a full count. Thomas left Davin on first base when Melissa Brown grounded out to first base.

Missouri jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Kelsea Roth knocked a leadoff single up the middle and Brianna Corwin entered to pinch run. Three batters later, Sarah Moore hit an RBI single to left field that fell out of the glove of Brown to plate Corwin and give the Tigers the lead.

In the top of the third, Tory Lewis drew a one-out walk but was thrown out trying to steal second base in the next at-bat.

Tennessee left a runner stranded in the top of the fourth. With one out, Lauren Gibson was hit by a pitch. Thomas sent Madison Shipman down looking on three pitches and Cheyanne Tarango grounded out to third base.

In the top of the fifth, Brown drew a 1-out walk but Thomas sent Hannah Akamine and Lewis down swinging to keep the UT offense at bay.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Jenna Marston hit a hard single off of Ellen Renfroe's leg. Hudson followed with a single to shallow right. After Ivy Renfroe entered the circle in relief, Angela Randazzo sent the first pitch she saw to right field for an RBI single.
