Aldrete Powers #8 UT Past Ole Miss, 5-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --Annie Aldrete clubbed a three-run homer in the first and No. 8 Tennessee stayed in control from start to finish in a 5-1 win over Ole Miss on Sunday to sweep the season series and wrap the regular season schedule.

Tennessee scored three in the first inning off the three-run homer by Aldrete and added runs in fourth and the fifth. Ole Miss (22-31, 3-21 SEC) scored its lone run of the game off an RBI single by Madi Osias in the top of the third.

Aldrete reached base three times with a homer and walk before being hit by a pitch in the fifth. Madison Shipman was 1-for-3 with one double, two runs and one walk. Haley Tobler finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Rainey Gaffin (7-3) earned the win after tossing 5.1 scoreless relief frames with three strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Erin Gabriel started the game and struck out two over two innings with one earned run allowed.

Carly Hummel (10-15) took the loss after issuing four earned runs over four innings. Emily Gaitan allowed one unearned run over two frames in relief.

Tennessee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Aldrete hammered a 2-1 pitch over the scoreboard in left field for a three run-shot.

Ole Miss got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. After RT Cantillo drew a leadoff walk and Haley Cully singled to first base to start the inning, Gaffin relieved Gabriel in the circle. With two runners in scoring position, Osias knocked an RBI single to center field, plating Cantillo. Gaffin induced three straight groundouts to close the inning.

Tennessee pushed its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Tobler roped a RBI single to left field, plating Shipman from third base.

The Lady Vols score one more run in the fifth inning when Aldrete was hit by a pitch with two outs and hthe bases loaded, plating Alley Perkins.

Tennessee next heads to the Columbia, S.C., to compete in the 2014 SEC Tournament from May 7-10. The Lady Vols have secured the No. 2 seed and will play on Thursday, May 8, at 1:30 p.m. ET against the winner of the game between No. 7 seed Kentucky and No. 10 seed Mississippi State. All SEC Tournament games leading up to the title game will be televised on ESPNU. The championship game will be on ESPN2.
