Game 5: UCLA 3, Tennessee 1
TENNESSEE CO-HEAD COACH Ralph Weekly
"I would first off like to praise UCLA. They played really well, they were very aggressive with the stick and they came at us from the get go. I am so proud of our kids, though. I think it's all part of the process when you're trying to build a program that rivals someone like UCLA who has been here 23 times. I told our kids after the game that sometimes you have to learn lessons like this and that it is all part of the process. But I would not trade these kids for anybody. Again, it was a great game but it just didn't go our way tonight."
TENNESSEE SOPHOMORE Monica Abbott
On her performance:
"I think UCLA came out with a game plan to really try and get me out of my rhythm. They took a lot of timeouts and their timeouts were really long. It was not like they were taking short timeouts - they all seemed like 20-minute periods. I was trying to get a rhythm going and their biggest thing was trying to keep me out of my rhythm and keep me unfocused."
TENNESSEE FRESHMAN Tonya Callahan
On her game-tying home run in the fourth inning:
"When I jumped on her first pitch I felt I was confident during that at-bat. I felt I was on her and I hit it solid the first time. I had the confidence in myself and in my hitting. I knew if I stayed focused and got my hands through the ball I would be able to put the ball in play somewhere."
TENNESSEE JUNIOR Sarah Fekete
On responding to tonight's loss:
"I think we're going to come back out and play with the emotion that we've been playing with. We're a first-time team here and UCLA came out ready to play today. You have to give credit to them. I think in the dugout we never felt like the game was over. I think the strongpoint of our team this year is that we've never given up on each other."
UCLA HEAD COACH SUE ENQUIST
"It was great to see us jump on Monica Abbott so early. I think that set the tone and gave us some ground. I was pretty proud of how we regained our composure offensively and went back to our original plan. Anjelica Selden pitched another great game for us. Tara Henry had the defensive play of the game with her throw to second in the top of the seventh."
On calling so many timeouts when batting:
"Monica Abbott is such a great competitor and I know that my team was up for a challenge. I told them that if they stepped in the batter's box and didn't feel comfortable, they need to step out. We get that a lot - people think we have a delay tactic, but it gets back to being true to your psyche in the moment. There is a tremendous amount of pressure in the box and I'm proud of how our batters rely on their instinct. If they aren't feeling good, they'll step out. Just as you saw Abbott pull off the rubber. She had that same respect for the rubber as we do for the batter's box."
UCLA SOPHOMORE TARA HENRY
On her seventh-inning defensive play:
"When it came off the bat, I knew that it was a shot. I was hoping it would bounce off the fence and I got a nice, beautiful hop right to my glove. I turned around and Caitlin Benyi was right there with the tag."
UCLA SOPHOMORE JODIE LEGASPI
On hitting against Tennessee's Monica Abbott:
"We had a plan going in there and staying true to that plan is a big thing. In my at bats, I was looking at hitting to the right side and also looking out for that inside pitch."
