NCAA WOMEN'S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
June 1-7, 2006
Don E. Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium
Oklahoma City, Okla.
Championship Series Game 1:
Tennessee 3, Arizona 0
TENNESSEE CO-HEAD COACH Karen Weekly
"Tonight was a really good win for our team. I think it was a really good team win. A lot of different kids contributed and came up big at critical times. But the first thing we told the kids after the game was there is no reason to celebrate yet. This is a series and this was just one win. We still have a lot of work to do against a very, very good Arizona team that we know will come out very prepared and fighting like crazy tomorrow."
On the decision to pull India Chiles:
"She had a little bit of swelling last night. The doctor said that was just an accumulation of everything she has been doing over the last two weeks and it just finally showed up. The swelling was gone this morning, but we just thought it was the best thing for her to let the knee rest tonight. Lexi (Alexia Clay) is a great hitter. We have tried to find ways to get her into that pinch hitter spot, but with India's situation and having to use her in that role instead of starting her in the outfield, it has been hard. But we have complete confidence in Lexi."
On if anything was different about Arizona pitcher Taryn Mowatt compared to Friday's WCWS meeting:
"She is a tough pitcher. After the kids watched the film we told them we need to be more aggressive when she throws strikes. I felt like Friday we were either taking the pitch or not really putting a good swing on the pitches that we needed to. But she is a tough pitcher and she was tough tonight, too. She changes speed really well."
TENNESSEE SENIOR PITCHER Monica Abbott
On her game plan tonight compared to Friday night against Arizona:
"I was trying to get a good mix of pitches. Arizona came out swinging both days. I am sure they will come out tomorrow prepared and looking for a good pitch."
On the difference between a 1-0 lead and a 2-0 lead:
"Obviously whenever any team has a 1-0 lead they are always trying to put another run on the board. I am confident in my team and what they are bringing to the plate. No matter what, I have to go out there and take care of business and they will have my back and I have theirs."
TENNESSEE FRESHMAN DESIGNATED PLAYER Alexia Clay
On when she found out she was starting and on the home run in her first at bat:
"I didn't find out until batting practice before the game. I was pretty excited to start but I just tried to focus on my process during batting practice. I was confident. I knew that she was going to throw me something good because we watched film on her for about three hours and I had seen her in the dugout the game before. So I was really confident up there and I was just looking for a good pitch in the strike zone. I had a pretty good feeling it was going out. I was a little concerned when I rounded first and saw Caitlin Lowe reaching for it and it hit her glove, but it felt pretty good off the bat.
TENNESSEE JUNIOR CATCHER Shannon Doepking
On Monica Abbott has elevated her game at the WCWS:
"Monica has worked hard all year to get where she is at. She is a great pitcher. I can't really tell the difference between 70 and 68, it's coming hard either way. She deserves everything she is getting right now. She has worked really hard to get where she is at."
TENNESSEE SENIOR PINCH HITTER India Chiles
On how she felt about not starting:
"I did want to start but I wasn't too bummed or too disappointed. I am a team player and like I told the coaches before, whether I am in there or not we are going to play the same. I have total confidence in Lexi (Alexia Clay) when she was going in, or anyone else off the bench who would have taken my spot. I just had a different role. I was in the dugout cheering my heart out and in the huddle saying good stuff. I have a total confidence in my team."
Championship Series Game 1:
Tennessee 3, Arizona 0
ARIZONA HEAD COACH MIKE CANDREA
"It was obviously disappointing but we have been here before and I told this team all along when we have innings left we have a chance. The good thing is we know what we need to do and we have 24 hours to regroup some things and make some adjustments and come out and play the game tomorrow."
"They've got pretty good balance in their lineup. Obviously they ran into a couple tonight, but I think when you get to this game hopefully you are going to see balance on both teams. With Abbott being a lefty throwing that hard, it is a little more difficult to make adjustments. Our kids were trying like hell to make them and tonight we need to put more balls into play. That is our job, to find a way."
On the positive of the game:
"There is nothing that can take away what this team has done. I am very proud of this group and my goal as a coach is to be playing in the last game of the year. I have been around this long enough to know that you have got to have special moments to make things happen and this group has really given us some very special moments and they have so many more to go. I believe in this group and I think this week has put them at another level in my eyes as a team. There is a lot of character on this team and there are a lot of competitors on this team and I don't think there is anything that they can be ashamed of from here on out. I want them to go out and play this game hard and whatever happens is going to happen. I guarantee this team will not lay down and die. This team will come back and fight."
ARIZONA JUNIOR PITCHER TARYNE MOWATT
On her game tonight:
"I felt fine. I had a game plan, I stuck to it. They got a hold of some pitches but overall I felt fine. Overall, my pitches were working and my change-up was working."
ARIZONA SENIOR CENTER FIELDER CAITLIN LOWE
On almost catching Alexia Clay's home run:
"It hit my glove. It hit the back of my glove. I thought I had it and jumped for it and I lost the ball."
On Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott's approach:
"I thought she had pretty much the same game plan for everyone. We did a better job of staying off the rise ball I thought."
ARIZONA SENIOR SHORTSTOP KRISTIE FOX
On Arizona's reputation of comebacks:
"I think we have a tough group of girls. We are all very competitive. We are never are going to just lie down and give it to anyone. We know that this could be our last game and that is what we knew earlier this week. We are going to do everything we can to not make it that way. I think we have a tough group of girls that wants it."
