Feb. 2, 2012
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 9 Tennessee Lady Vol softball team looks to continue building fan excitement, after hosting nine sellout crowds in 2011, for its upcoming 2012 campaign by inviting Big Orange supporters out to an open house event at the Lee Softball Stadium on Sat., Feb. 4th, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. ET.
Members of the Tennessee Athletic Department will be on site beginning at 11:30 a.m. to begin hosting tours of the facility, including the UT clubhouse, press box area and dugout, while giving fans an opportunity to view either their current softball season ticket seats or open seat options available for purchase.
The Tennessee coaching staff and softball squad will also conduct a speaking presentation at noon and be available for autograph signing over an hour-long period from 12:30-1:30 p.m. ET.
"Karen (Co-Head Coach Weekly) and I as well as our team are looking very forward to meeting and greeting the Tennessee softball fans on Saturday," Co-Head Coach Ralph Weekly said. The Big Orange fans have been so essential to our success over the last few seasons. We're even more excited to get the opportunity to meet new fans who want to watch exciting softball action at Lee Stadium."
Free parking will be available next to the facility.
In 2011 Tennessee softball registered 49 wins, won the program's second Southeastern Conference Tournament title and earned a No. 14 national seeding in the annual NCAA Tournament. The Lady Vol softball squad begins the 2012 campaign ranked No. 9 in the preseason via the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
This year's edition of the Big Orange softball squad returns 15 letter-winners, including seven that started at least 31 games in 2011, and welcomes back all 49 pitching victories from the circle. UT bolsters that impressive depth with the addition of a high-profile class of four newcomers that was rated No. 2 in the nation for 2011 by ESPN RISE.
In all, Tennessee returns 74% of the total hits, 78% of the runs, 67% of the doubles, 75% of the triples, 68% of the home runs, 74% of the RBIs and 83% of the stolen bases from a team that reached as high as No. 3 in the national rankings while completing the 2011 season as the NCAA Division I's top offense by batting average (.348).
UT is slated to open its home schedule on Wednesday, February 29th, at 3 p.m. with a double-header versus Georgia Southern.
