WHAT'S ON DECK IN 2013

The 2013 softball season is finally here! Here are a few things Lady Vol fans should know entering this new season:

  • No. 6/5 Tennessee will have seven SEC games televised, with three on the ESPN networks, three on FOX Sports Net and one on CSS.
  • For home games not on TV, there will be a free live video broadcast on UTSports.com, often featuring Brian Rice as the play-by-play announcer.
  • Tennessee will have a free live audio broadcast on UTSports.com for all road games. These broadcasts will feature play-by-play from Stephen K. Lee
  • Coverage of UT softball games will also include a free live blog on the "Gameday Central" pages. The live blog will follow the action and fans can interact and ask questions.
  • Tennessee has a program record of 799-339-2, so the next UT victory will be No. 800.
  • UT co-head coach Karen Weekly is 789-273-2 as a head coach in her entire career. Eleven more wins puts her in the 800-win club.
  • UT co-head coach Ralph Weekly is 1,067-357-2 as a head coach in his entire career. Thirty-three more wins puts him in the 1,100-win club.
  • The Weeklys are 566-176-2 at Tennessee. Thirty-four more wins gives them 600 for their UT careers.
  • Tennessee features five Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans on its roster: Raven Chavanne (2010, 2011, 2012), Lauren Gibson (2011, 2012), Ellen Renfroe (2011, 2012), Madison Shipman (2012) and Kat Dotson (2010).
  • There's a lot of Red, White and Blue in that Tennessee Orange! UT has six players who have played for Team USA, either on the U.S. Senior National Team, the USA Elite Team, the U.S. Junior National Team or the USA Futures Team -- Lauren Gibson (2011-2012 U.S. Senior National), Raven Chavanne (2010 USA Futures Team, 2011 Senior National Camp invitee), Ellen Renfroe (2012 USA Elite Team, 2012 Senior National Camp invitee), Madison Shipman (2012 USA Elite Team, 2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team), Cheyanne Tarango (2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team), Erin Gabriel (2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team)

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS

  • In 2012, SUU went 29-25 and finished third in the Summit League. The Thunderbirds hit .303 and had a 3.86 team ERA.
  • SUU returns 10 letterwinners, seven starters and two pitchers from a year ago.
  • Of those returning starters, Southern Utah returns five players who hit .310 or better and drove in at least 30 runs
  • Southern Utah is in its inaugural season in the Big Sky Conference and was picked to finish third by the league's coaches
  • The Thunderbirds return their top slugger from 2012 in Easton All-American Mikkel Griffin. Griffin led the team with a .404 batting average, 65 hits, 12 home runs, 10 stolen bases and a .714 slugging percentage in 2012.
  • The Thunderbirds also return their RBI leader in Kelsey Bryant (.316 BA, 7 HRs, 10 2Bs, 1 3B, 43 RBIs)
  • SUU lost its top pitcher from 2012 in Heather Black. Senior lefty Danielle Axe went 7-5 with a 5.60 ERA in 26 appearances last year and sophomore righty Ashley Ostler was 2-2 with a 5.50 ERA in 16 appearances.

SCOUTING THE BENGALS

  • Idaho State went 12-36 in 2012. The Bengals hit .251 as a team and had a 5.50 team ERA.
  • The Bengals return their top player from last year in senior pitcher/infielder Amanda Fitzsimmons. She led the team offensively with a .324 batting average, nine homers, four triples and 37 RBIs. Fitzsimmons also went 11-13 in the circle with a 4.46 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 164.2 innings.
  • ISU also brings back Vicky Galasso, who it .303 with four homers, a team-high 10 doubles and 24 RBIs in 2012.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

  • Utah State went 17-36 last season. The Aggies hit .250 as a team and posted a 5.32 team ERA.
  • The Aggies return their top three offensive player from 2012 in Christine Thomsen (.418 BA, 5 HRs, 14 2Bs, 22 RBIs), Kelley Kaneshiro (.340 BA, 7 HRs, 1 2B, 22 RBIs) and Hailey Froton (.274 BA, 6 HRs, 8 2Bs, 25 RBIs).
  • Utah State also returns its primary two pitchers from last year in senior righties Mandy Harmon (7-16, 4.99 ERA, 100 Ks) and Shelby Tyteca (5-10, 4.23 ERA, 70 Ks)

  • The Coyotes return their top pitcher in senior righty Erica Denney (10-18, 3.47 ERA 104 Ks) and top hitter in sophomore outfielder in Katie Dinning (.284 BA, 6 3Bs, 5 2Bs, 15 RBIs, 13 SBs).

SCOUTING THE COUGARS

  • BYU went 45-15 in 2012 and were eliminated by Oregon in the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Ore. The Cougars hit .315 as a team and their pitchers combined for a 2.61 ERA.
  • The Cougars return six starters from a season ago, including their top pitching duo of junior Tori Almond (20-4, 2.00 ERA, 154 Ks) and senior Hanna Howell (20-8, 2.74 ERA, 137 Ks)
  • The team graduated four of its top five hitters, including outstanding NFCA All-American outfielder Delaney Willard (.418 BA, 18 HRs, 17 2Bs, 88 RBIs).
  • BYU's top returning hitter is JC Clayton, who hit .405 with four triples, three doubles, 20 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS

  • Oklahoma State went 25-26 and finished seventh in the Big 12 last season. The Cowgirls hit .225 as a team and their pitchers combined for a 2.69 ERA.
  • Four-time All-American and former Alabama pitcher Kelsi Dunne is Oklahoma State's new pitching coach.
  • OK State's top two returning hitters are sophomore outfielder Shelby Davis, who hit a team-best .310 with two doubles, two triples and six RBIs, and senior utility Tamara Brown, who hit .303 with seven doubles, one triple and 14 RBIs.
  • The Cowgirls also return their pitching duo of senior righty Kat Espinosa (15-13, 2.38 ERA, 143 Ks) and junior righty Simone Freeman (7-11, 2.74 ERA, 117 Ks).
