KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Following a standout weekend at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Tennessee Lady Vol sophomore Ellen Renfroe has been selected as the 2012 campaign's initial Southeastern Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, according to a Monday announcement by the league office.
The 6-0 right hander has now reaped SEC Pitcher of the Week accolades on three occasions in her brief career after previous nods on March 28 and April 18, 2011, and owns five total SEC weekly honors (SEC Freshman of the Week on March 21 and April 4, 2011).
The Jackson, Tenn., native was impressive from the circle in helping the Big Orange to a 5-1 opening weekend, recording a perfect 5-0 mark with a 1.13 ERA, four complete games, three solo shutouts and 48 strikeouts while working 31 of Tennessee's 42 total innings.
Renfroe defeated four different 2011 NCAA Tournament teams (Texas Tech, San Diego State, No. 1 Arizona State and Western Michigan) and with the 3-0, complete-game shutout of preseason No. 1 and defending national champion Arizona State on its home field, has now defeated four different No. 1 or No. 2-ranked teams (#1 Alabama, #2 UCLA, #2 Georgia in 2011) during her stay at Rocky Top.
She didn't allow a run over her first 27 innings of work (her initial three starts of the year were complete-game shutouts) and crossed the 10-strikeout threshold during three of her four starts, with a high of 14 K's in a 1-0 gem against Texas Tech. She threw a total of 467 pitches over the opening weekend, requiring an efficient 92 in defeating the top-rated Sun Devils.
Tennessee softball returns to action over Feb. 17-19, at the Time-Warner Invitational in Austin, Texas. UT christens its stay at the event with Friday match-ups against Illinois (12:30 p.m. CT) and #18/19 Texas (6 p.m. CT). The contest versus the home-standing Longhorns will be shown live via The Longhorn Network and can be accessed through the following link: http://espn.go.com/longhornnetwork/index
