The 2013 softball season is finally here! Here are a few things Lady Vol fans should know:

  • No. 4/4 Tennessee will have seven SEC games televised, with three on the ESPN networks, three on FOX Sports Net and one on CSS.
  • For home games not on TV, there will be a free live video broadcast on, often featuring Brian Rice as the play-by-play announcer.
  • Tennessee will have a free live audio broadcast on for all road games. These broadcasts will feature play-by-play from Stephen K. Lee
  • Coverage of UT softball games will also include a free live blog on the "Gameday Central" pages. The live blog will follow the action and fans can interact and ask questions.
  • UT co-head coach Karen Weekly is 794-273-2 as a head coach in her entire career. Six more wins puts her in the 800-win club.
  • UT co-head coach Ralph Weekly is 1,072-357-2 as a head coach in his entire career. Twenty-eight more wins puts him in the 1,100-win club.
  • The Weeklys are 571-176-2 at Tennessee. Twenty-nine more wins gives them 600 for their UT careers.
  • Tennessee features five Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans on its roster: Raven Chavanne (2010, 2011, 2012), Lauren Gibson (2011, 2012), Ellen Renfroe (2011, 2012), Madison Shipman (2012) and Kat Dotson (2010).
  • There's a lot of Red, White and Blue in that Tennessee Orange! UT has six players who have played for Team USA, either on the U.S. Senior National Team, the USA Elite Team, the U.S. Junior National Team or the USA Futures Team -- Lauren Gibson (2011-2012 U.S. Senior National), Raven Chavanne (2010 USA Futures Team, 2011 Senior National Camp invitee), Ellen Renfroe (2012 USA Elite Team, 2012 Senior National Camp invitee), Madison Shipman (2012 USA Elite Team, 2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team), Cheyanne Tarango (2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team), Erin Gabriel (2010-11 U.S. Junior National Team)

The teams' previous meeting was in the 2006 USF adidas Tournament in Tampa, Fla. Tonya Callahan and Liane Horiuchi hit home runs and Monica Abbott pitched a 12-strikeout, two-hitter in a 9-0 UT win.


  • NC State is 4-1 this season and defeated Kansas, 3-2, in the championshp game of the FIU Panther Invitational last week. The Wolfpack also defeated Georgetown and Florida International (twice) in last weekend's season-opening tournament.
  • In 2012, NC State went 23-31 and finished seventh in the ACC with a 5-15 league mark
  • The Wolfpack returns 11 letterwinners from last season, including eight returning starters and one returning pitcher
  • NC State is currently hitting .260 as a team while opponents are hitting .228 against the Wolfpack
  • The Wolfpack's pitchers have combined for a 3.38 ERA. The team's ace is sophomore righty Emily Weiman, who is 4-0 in four starts this season with a 2.08 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 26.0 innings. Opposing hitters are batting .177 against Weiman.
  • NC State returned its top two hitters from last year in Renada Davis (2012: .362 BA, 5 HRs, 26 RBIs) and Bethaney Wells (2012: .293 BA, 11 HRs, 39 RBIs). Davis and Wells each have a home run this season, however they are both batting .188 after the opening weekend.
  • The Wolfpack's top two hitters so far in 2013 have been Chelsea Tate (.500 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBIs) and Hanna Sommer (.400 BA, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs).

  • The Chanticleers are hitting .222 while opponents are hitting .240 against their pitchers.
  • CCU's pitchers have combined for a 3.03 ERA. Kiana Quolas (1-1) has led the team with an 0.98 ERA, 17 strikeouts and two complete games
  • Coastal Carolina top two hitters so far in 2013 have been Jazmin Daigle (.375 BA, 1 HR, 4 RBIs) and Bri Chiusano (.368 BA, 2 RBIs)
  • The Chanticleers went 44-20 in 2012 and were an NCAA Tournament team. They played in the Athens Regional and were eliminated by North Carolina, 5-3. The team finished second in the Big South with a 13-8 conference record.
  • Coastal Carolina returns 13 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad.

USF won the last meeting between the teams on Feb. 17, 2008, 4-1. Tennessee pitchers held the Bulls to just three hits, but issued nine walks in the loss.


  • No. 12/12 USF was a 2012 Women's College World Series team.
  • USF started the 2013 season 3-1 in its USF-Wilson DeMarini Opening Day Tournament from Feb. 8-10. The Bulls defeated Marshall, Michigan and Samford and loss to FAU.
  • The Bulls are hitting .284 as a team this season and have outscored thire opponents, 15-4. Opposing teams are hitting just .094 against USF's pitchers.
  • USF boasts one of the top pitchers in the nation in junior lefty Sara Nevins. In 2012, Nevins was a finalist for USA Softball National Player of the year and was an NFCA All-Mideast Region selection. She went 31-8 with a 1.12 ERA and 336 strikeouts as a sophomore ace in 2012.
  • The Bulls pitching staff has a 0.81 ERA through four games. Nevins earned the win in in her first start of the season, striking out nine and allowing one run in 6.2 frames. Senior righty Lindsey Richardson has seen the bulk of the work in the circle so far, going 1-1- with two complete games and two saves in four appearances. Richardson has struck out 17 batters in 13.1 frames.
  • Kourtney Salvarola (.600 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, 5 runs) and Lee Ann Spivey (.556 BA, 3 2Bs, 3 RBIs) have been USF's top hitters so far in 2013.
