SCOUTING THE 49ERS

  • Long Beach State is 4-4 this season. The 49ers are batting .277 as a team and their pitchers have combined for a 7.33 ERA.
  • The 49ers are coming off a 2-3 showing in the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas. The team is fresh off back-to-back losses to Oregon State (L, 17-3) and Utah (L, 3-1).
  • In 2012, Long Beach State went 29-25 and finished first in the Big West with a 16-5 league record. The team played in the Tempe Regional of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by Syracuse.
  • The 49ers' main offensive catalysts this year are Briana Stephan (.478 BA, four doubles, one triple, three RBIs, seven runs), Hannah De Gaetano (.385 BA, two homers, two doubles, 10 RBIs, seven runs) and Karili Sandoval (.316 BA, four homers, 11 RBIs, six runs).
  • In the circle, the team's ace is Erin Jones-Wesley (3-3), who has a 4.57 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 30.2 innings of work. Opposing batters are hitting .250 against her.
  • In 2012, Jones-Wesley tossed the bulk of Long Beach State's inings and went 21-13 with a 2.02 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 229.0 innings.

Madison Shipman hit her first homer of the season and Ivy Renfroe fanned six in a complete-game shutout.

SCOUTING THE TITANS

  • Cal State Fullerton is 3-6 on the season. The Titans are batting .202 and their pitchers have combined for a 2.78 ERA.
  • The Titans went 20-31 in 2012 and finished sixth in the Big West with an 8-13 league record.
  • Fullerton returned 14 letterwinners, including six position starters and three pitchers from a season ago. The team has nine newcomers.
  • The Titans are coming off a 1-4 showing in the UNLV Tournament. Fullerton is fresh off a 6-0 loss to Oregon on Feb. 17.
  • One common opponent the Titans and Lady Vols have faced is BYU. Fullerton lost to BYU, 4-3, on Feb. 16. UT defeated BYU, 6-3, on Feb. 9.
  • Cal State Fullerton's top hitter is Ariel Tsuchiyama, who leads the team with a .400 batting average, a homer, a triple and seven RBIs. Jasmine Antunez (.300 BA, one homer, three RBIs) is the only other Titan hitting .300 or better.
  • Jasmine Antunez has tossed the majority of the innings for the Titans so far in 2013. She has a 2.57 ERA witha 2-4 record and 39 strikeouts in 30.0 innings. She has held opposing hitters to a .187 batting average.

Northwestern scored two in the first inning off a two-run homer by Marisa Bast. Lauren Gibson homered and Melissa Brown had an RBI triple in the top fourth for UT, but the Wildcats scored once more in the bottom sixth.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS

  • Northwestern is 3-6 on the season. The Wildcats are batting .307 as a team and their pitchers have combined for a 3.27 ERA.
  • The Wildcats are coming offa 3-1 showing in the Georgia Softball Classic with two wins over Middle Tennessee State and one over Campbell. NU lost to No. 13 Georgia on Feb. 15, 6-5.
  • Northwestern went 29-29 in 2012, finished fourth in the Big Ten with a 14-10 league mark and was a finalist in the NCAA Austin Regional.
  • NU returns 15 leterwinners and 10 starters from 2012.
  • Anna Edwards (.375 BA, two homers, two triples four doubles, 10 RBI) has been NU's biggest slugger so far this season. Andrea DiPrima (.524 BA, three doubles, two RBI, two runs) has been efficient at the plate. Marisa Bast (.303 BA, two homers, seven RBIs) and Mari Majam (.303 BA, six RBIs) have also been run producers.
  • Amy Letourneau (2-3, 2.84 ERA, 53 Ks, 32.0 IP) and Meghan Lamberth (1-2, 2.62 ERA, 11 Ks, 18.2 IP) have been Northwesterns primary pitchers in the circle.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS

  • No. 16/13 UCLA is 8-1 on the season and batting .350 as a team. The Bruins' pitchers have combined for a 2.04 ERA.
  • The Bruins are coming pff a 5-0 run through the Easton Desert Classic from Feb. 15-17 with wins over Hawai'i, San Jose State, Seattle University, Louisian-Monroe and Ohio.
  • Six of UCLA's eight wins have come by way of run rule, including its last three.
  • In 2012, the Bruins went 36-20 and tied for fourth in the Pac-12 with a 12-12 league mark. They were eliminated by Florida State in their NCAA Regional hosted at Easton Stadium
  • UCLA boasts a deadly lineup with six batters hitting .368 or better this year. The Bruins have outscored opponents, 68-19.
  • B.B. Bates leads the team with whopping numbers: a .464 batting average, nine homers, 21 RBIS and 13 runs scored.
  • Devon Lindvall (.455 BA) and Gracie Goulder (.429 BA, two homers, two doubles) are also off to a hot start.
  • Stephany LaRosa swings a big-bat with seven extra-base hits (four homers, three doubles), a .392 batting average and 1 RBIs.
  • In the circle, Ally Carda (5-0, 1.58 ERA, 39 Ks, 26.2 IP) and Paige McDuffee (3-0, 0.93 ERA, 11 Ks, 15.0 IP) present a formidable tandem.

Tennessee and UCSB will square off for the third consecutive year. UT has outscored the Gauchos, 9-0, over those two games. In 2012, UT took a 7-0 victory in the Kajikawa Classic. The game was the Lady Vols' season opener and Madison Shipman and Lauren Gibson hit solo homers while Ellen Renfroe fanned 11 batters in a one-hit shutout.

SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS

  • UC Santa Barbara is 8-2 on the season and the Gauchos are batting .317 as a team. UCSB pitchers have combined for a 2.94 ERA.
  • The Gauchos are coming off a 3-2 showing in their own Gaucho Classic from Feb. 15-17. UCSB took two wins over San Diego and one over Fresno State while suffering two big losses to Missouri.
  • In 2012, UCSB went 30-28 and finished second in the Big West with a 15-6 league mark.
  • The Gauchos have five batters hitting .333 or better.
  • Keilani Jennings leads the team with a .438 batting average, four homers, three doubles and 13 RBIs.
  • Ariana Palomares is also off to a fine start, hitting .412 with two triples, two doubles and two RBIS.
  • In the circle, the Gauchos feature two young pitchers in sophomore Shelby Wisdom (6-2, 2.62 ERA, 34 Ks, 34.2 IP) and freshman Alex Pingree (1-0, 2.14 ERA, 11 Ks, 19.2 IP) taking the majority of the work.
