BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman third baseman/outfielder Raven Chavanne's incredible weekend at the plate for No. 22 Tennessee (5-2) has earned her Southeastern Conference Softball Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, according to a Monday release by the league office.
Chavanne wreaked havoc from the lead-off spot in the line-up for the Big Orange at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. Over four contests the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native went a staggering 13-of-16 at the plate for an .813 average with a double, two triples, a grand slam (her first collegiate home run), three steals, 12 runs scored and seven RBIs. She reached base safely all 17 times she stepped into the batter's box, 13 by base hit, twice by error and once each on a walk and a fielder's choice. The 5-8 third baseman/outfielder posted a pair of perfect 4-for-4 games, scored four runs in two separate match-ups and came up just a double short of hitting for the cycle during a 4-for-4, triple, grand slam, career-high six-RBI effort in the 21-2 (5 inn.) rout of Weber State (2/20). Chavanne also singled to lead off each of the Lady Vols' four games at the tournament and had a string of seven consecutive hits over two match-ups (Weber State and Bradley). She is now hitting an impressive .560 overall and slugging at a .880 clip with a .593 on-base percentage through the opening two weeks of her career at Rocky Top.
No. 22 Tennessee will wrap up the Troy Cox Classic on Tuesday in a title contest versus New Mexico State at 7 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available through utladyvols.com, while periodic updates will be posted at www.Twitter.com/UTLadyVols.
