BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A week after earning her initial nod as the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Week, outfielder Raven Chavanne has added her first selection as the SEC Freshman of the Week according to Monday's release by the league office.
Chavanne continued her sparkling rookie season by posting a .611 (11-of-18) batting average with four stolen bases, four runs scored and four RBIs over a five-game stretch that included the championship contest of the Troy Cox Classic and the prestigious Cathedral City Classic. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native and lead-off hitter posted at least two base knocks in four of the five games, including a perfect 4-for-4, three RBI effort in the championship match-up of the Troy Cox Classic against New Mexico State (her third 4-for-4 game of the season), a 3-for-3, three-steal, two-run, RBI performance in an 8-6 win over Syracuse and a 2-for-4, run scored effort against No. 10 Stanford. The four hits against New Mexico State extended streaks from last week's SEC Player of the Week effort to reach eight consecutive base hits and reaching safely in 22 straight plate appearances by hit, walk, error or fielder's choice (17 hits, two walks, two errors, one fielder's choice). She also opened the New Mexico State, No. 10 Stanford and Syracuse games with a base hit.
No. 21 Tennessee returns to action this weekend at the annual Tennessee Classic over March 5-7. The Lady Vols open the event on Fri. night against Ohio at 6 p.m. ET at Lee Softball Stadium.
