Jessica Spigner Bashes Her Way to SEC Player of the Week Honors
Jessica Spigner

Jessica Spigner

March 17, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The breakout campaign for Tennessee third baseman Jessica Spigner continues as the freshman has been selected as the Southeastern Conference Softball Player of the Week (March 17th) following her strong offensive contributions during victories over Belmont and South Carolina (two triumphs). She joins fellow Lady Vols Tiffany Huff (Feb. 9) and Cat Hosfield (Freshman of the Week - Feb. 23) as UT recipients of league player of the week honors thus far in 2009.

Spigner hit .545 (6-for-11) last week with three home runs, two doubles and 10 RBIs, upping her season run-batted-in total to 28. The Santa Clarita, Calif., product blasted homers in each of the three contests, two hits in all three match-ups and also slugged at a staggering 1.545 clip. She now boasts a league-best 10 HR's in her initial 26 collegiate games while clad in the Orange & White. That impressive power total moves Spigner within three big flies of tying Carrie Swinford for the UT freshman single-season HR record of 13. That long-standing mark was established 14 years ago, back during Tennessee softball's inaugural season of 1996, the year before the SEC began sponsoring the sport. In comparison, former three-time Lady Vol All-American Tonya Callahan, the Big Orange career record holder for home runs with 51, blasted 11 home runs during her rookie campaign in 2005 over an entire 82-game season.

Spigner and No. 6 Tennessee (23-3, 2-0 SEC) step briefly out of league play for a Wed., March 18, tilt against MTSU (4-13) at the Lee Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with live stats available through utladyvols.com via Gametracker.
