April 16, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior left fielder India Chiles has reaped what could be the first of many awards this season by being selected as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week according to a Monday release from the league office. The Louisville, Ky., native hit .667 (8-of-12) for No. 1 Tennessee at Kentucky and .562 during the four-game week with a school record four stolen bases in UT's 9-4 series-closing victory over UK to receive the honor.

As the lead-off hitter for the Lady Vols and currently the top performer all-time in Tennessee history in batting average at .418, Chiles continued her outstanding play while "setting the table" as a slapper for the Big Orange offense. With her major goal to reach base and wreak havoc on the base paths, she did just that by swiping six bases during the Kentucky series, including a school-record four in the finale, to raise her stolen bag total to a team-best 35 for the season. With her effort at the dish, Chiles improved her current hitting streak to seven games. She was a perfect 4-for-4 in the opening 12-0 victory over UK with two runs scored and two steals. With a 2-for-4, three-run, four-stolen base effort against UK in the finale, she has now recorded two or more base knocks in each of her last nine SEC tilts while recording a .735 average on a 25-of-34 performance at the plate. Chiles' season batting average continued to skyrocket to an SEC-best .478 counting all games, while her SEC-only average rose to an amazing .585 (31-of-53). Her week-long on-base percentage was .611. She possesses 21 multi-hit games in 2007 and has tallied at least one run in each of her last 15 contests.

Chiles will lead No. 1 Tennessee into action at the State Line Classic in Bristol, Tenn., on Tuesday, April 17, when the Lady Vols face Radford in a single contest at 5:30 p.m. Live stats will be available through utladyvols.com, and periodic updates will be provided to the Lady Vol Hotline at 865-974-8700 (box #6).
