KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee's Erin Gabriel, Rainey Gaffin, Ellen Renfroe and Madison Shipman have been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 3 Division I First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
Shipman and Renfroe were both 2013 Capital One Academic All-Americans and 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team selections. Renfroe has earned All-District 3 honors in each of the three years (2012, 2013, 2014) she has been eligible for nomination. Student-athletes must be sophomores, juniors or seniors to be nominated. Gabriel and Gaffin earned All-District 3 honors in their first years as eligible nominees.
The Capital One Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
Student-athletes who receive First Team All-District status move onto the national Capital One Academic All-America® ballot. These national awards (First Team, Second Team, Third Team) will be voted upon by Academic All-America® Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
Renfroe is also a Top 25 Finalist for 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and a nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. She has a 3.75 cumulative GPA and has been named to the University of Tennessee Dean's List seven times in her career. The two-time Capital One Academic All-American (2012, 2013) has earned SEC Academic Honor Roll honors in each of the last two seasons and was a 2011 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection. Renfroe is enjoying an outstanding senior campaign, going 25-5 with a 1.95 ERA, 207 strikeouts. 25 complete games, nine shutouts and four saves over 190.1 innings. She earned USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week on April 1 and has been named SEC Pitcher of the Week three times (Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 31).
Shipman is also a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award and a Top 25 Finalist for 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She has a 3.49 cumulative GPA and has been named to the Dean's List four times in her career. Shipman was a Capital One Academic All-American in 2013, earned SEC Academic Honor Roll honors in each of the last two seasons and was a 2011 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection. Her 2014 senior season has been one for the ages so far as Shipman ranks ninth in the country with 17 home runs while hitting .441 with a .888 slugging percentage (sixth in the nation), a .560 on-base percentage (ninth in the nation) and 47 RBIs. Shipman has earned SEC Player of the Week honors twice this season (March 24, April 14).
Gabriel was a 2013 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection, owns a perfect 4.0 GPA and has been named to the Dean's List three times. She is 5-0 on the season with a 2.96 ERA, 54 strikes, two complete games and two shutouts over 54.1 innings. Gabriel set career high for strikeouts in a game on Feb. 14, fanning 11 batters over five shutout innings in win against Binghamton.
Gaffin was a 2013 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection, owns a 3.38 GPA and has been named to the Dean's List once. She has balanced both pitching and hitting as a sophomore, going 5-3 in the circle with a 1.46 ERA, 45 strikeouts, one complete game and one shutout over 38.1 frames and hitting .317 with one homer, three triples, nine RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Gaffin tossed the 40th no-hitter in Tennessee history and the first of her career on March 5 against Wright State. Making her first collegiate start as a pitcher, Gaffin fanned six over six no-hit innings in an 8-0 (6) win over Wright State.
