KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After another outstanding weekend in helping No. 5 Tennessee to an important sweep of Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas, sophomore Raven Chavanne has been chosen as both the SEC Softball Player and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week for May 2.
For the 5-8 leftfielder this selection marks her second as the SEC Player of the Week in 2011 and the fourth weekly league honor of her brief career clad in the Orange & White. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native was previously tabbed as the SEC Player of the Week on both Feb. 14, 2011 and Feb. 22, 2010, and as the SEC Freshman of the Week on March 1, 2010.
The total of Tennessee SEC softball honorees improves to a league-best eight overall through the opening 12 weeks of the 2011 campaign. Ellen Renfroe owns four of those selections, reaping a pair of nods as the SEC Pitcher of the Week on March 28 and April 18 and picking up SEC Freshman of the Week accolades on both March 21 and April 4. Kat Dotson was selected the SEC Player of the Week on March 7, while first baseman/designated player Melissa Davin was chosen as the SEC Freshman of the Week on April 11.
A top 25 national finalist for the 2011 USA Softball National College Player of the Year award, Chavanne wreaked havoc on Arkansas from her lead-off spot in the UT batting order. During the three-game series she hit .857 (6-for-7) with four doubles, six runs scored, three walks and five RBIs, reached base safely nine of the 10 times she stepped to the plate (four doubles, three walks and two singles) and had a streak of reaching successfully in seven straight plate appearances over the first two contests against UA. Chavanne stretched her current hitting streak to a career-best 14 games. During that skein Chavanne is hitting at a .609 (29-of-48) clip, raising her overall average to a SEC-leading .479. She posted a perfect 2-for-2 effort during each of the first two match-ups in the series against Arkansas and was 2-for-3 in the finale with a bases-clearing, three-run double that proved the major blow in UT's five-run second inning.
The SEC regular season title and top-seeding for the upcoming SEC Tournament is on the line this weekend in Gainesville, Fla., as No. 6/5 Tennessee ventures to face No. 5/7 Florida in a huge three-game series at Pressly Stadium. All three contests are slated for TV coverage: the opener will be broadcast via FOX Sports Florida at 4:30 p.m. ET, Saturday's contest is slated for live broadcast on ESPN at Noon ET and Sunday's series finale will be shown on ESPNU at 3 p.m. ET.
